So I just discovered that Open Diary deleted my old diary. This makes me mad. It was my very first online diary/journal thing, and I liked to look at it every now and then for nostalgia reasons. Now it's gone, forever. It's just not right of them to completely erase it. I'm so glad LJ never does that unless you ask them to.

websites, idiots, frustration

This leads me to something I've been wondering about (because my mom is so completely convinced that keepinga journal here on LJ is bad because it will get erased causing me to greatly fear what has just happened to you)...

Is there someway to download your LJ so you can save it to a disc or something??

http://www.livejournal.com/export.bml

Some clients let you export as well (and might be more convenient, I'm not sure). I use Linux so I just do it from that page and don't bother trying to find something easier (I doubt it's out there for Linux). Anyway, I have used the export feature countless times to download my journal. I download my entries and delete them after (I clear out old entries cos I'm obsessive like that). The only downside (which is actually a pretty large downside, but I accept it) is that you lose your comments.

LJ never deletes journals though. Never. As far as I can tell, that will never happen. I've been using this site 5 years now. If any of my old journals are gone, it's because I deleted them.

I could have warned you about that. They've deleted every diary I've ever had with them. Haven't I ever told you my sad, pissed off story from years ago? I lost two years of writing from like 1999 - 2001 on OD. It was my very first online diary too. That's weird we both started there. Anyway, it was worse with me because they changed the rules while I'd been gone, so I had no idea to expect it. However, for years now, they've been deleting diaries inactive for a period of 2 months or so.
