Helping Ruki deliver his drawings to Aoi had become part of Reita’s weekly routine. Every Thursday for the past two months, he walked to Ruki’s after work and together they’d taken Ruki’s drawings to the tattoo parlor. Every Thursday Ruki held on to Reita’s jacket as they crossed the street. Every Thursday Ruki grinned at Reita as he took the last step from the street to the sidewalk. Every Thursday Reita couldn’t wait to go and see Ruki. Every Thursday Reita’s heart fluttered. And it was all Ruki’s fault. There was no doubt in Reita’s mind; he most certainly had a crush on Ruki.

Reita never minded crossing the street with Ruki. Ruki wanted him there and that was all it took for Reita to appear at Ruki’s door each Thursday. Although he still held onto Reita’s jacket, Ruki didn’t even hesitate before taking his first step onto the street anymore. It had taken a while, but Reita really felt like Ruki was getting over his dromophobia. That’s why this Thursday, Reita stood by the crosswalk next to Ruki and suggested, “Why don’t you try crossing the street today without holding my jacket?” Ruki quickly shook his head in protest and then stared at the ground. “Why not?”

“I want to cross the street with you,” he mumbled as he continued staring at the ground.

Reita chuckled. “Ruki, I’ll still be walking right next to you. Don’t you want to be able to cross the street by yourself?” There was a pause and then finally Ruki shook his head slowly-still staring at the ground. “You don’t want to be able to cross the street by yourself?! Why not?!”

They stood there for maybe a minute as people walked around them. Ruki rubbed his arm and he mumbled, “You only visit me on Thursdays… to help me cross the street… If I can do it by myself then there’s no reason for you to come visit me any longer.”

Once Reita was over the initial shock of Ruki’s explanation, he started grinning as if he’d been smacked in the face with a bag of happiness. He laughed as he said, “Don’t be silly, Ruki! I’d visit you everyday if you wanted me to!” Reita honestly had no idea Ruki felt that he only visited for that reason. Sure, he didn’t come over on different days anymore, but he didn’t want Ruki to get sick of seeing him!

Ruki lifted his head to look at Reita and asked, “You’d still come over and visit me?”

“I can’t believe you’d even ask me that, Ruki!” Reita laughed. “Of course I would!” He paused and then added, “You know what would be a good idea?”

“Crossing the street so I can deliver these to Aoi-san?”

Reita snorted and said, “Yes that would be a good idea, but I was thinking of a different one.”

“What one were you thinking of?” Ruki asked curiously.

“How about we get you a cell phone, Ruki?!” Reita suggested excitedly, but only received a blank stare from Ruki. Reita elaborated, “That way you can call Aoi if you ever had a problem again. And you could call Kai in case you forgot to put something on your grocery list! You could call me whenever you wanted to see me, and I’ll know when to come over!” He really thought this was a fantastic plan.

“No,” Ruki answered flatly and then tugged on Reita’s sleeve, pulling him across the street. If Reita hadn’t been so disappointed at Ruki’s answer, he might have been amused at how their roles seemed to have switched. Ruki was pulling him.

“Aw, come on Ruki!” Reita whined as Ruki dragged him along the sidewalk.

“No! I’ve only used the phone maybe five times in my life and three of them were when I talked to Uruha! Why would I want to pay for one of my own?”

“Please?!” Reita begged, but Ruki just ignored him and pushed the door of the tattoo parlor open. “Aoi-san!” Reita called.

“Hey guys,” Aoi greeted with a wave from behind the counter.

Still whining, Reita said, “Aoi-san, tell Ruki it would be a great idea for him to get a cell phone!”

Aoi nodded at Ruki. “He’s right, Ruki. It would be very useful if you had a cell phone. Don’t you think you’d be happier, too?”

“Aoi-san!” Ruki gasped, walking over to the counter and setting the envelope of drawings in front of Aoi. “How can you think I’d be happier with a cell phone when I’m telephonophobic?!”

“Because you’d be able to talk to Reita anytime you wanted,” Aoi said with a smirk.

Reita was sure his heart was doing some sort of dance because of the way it started beating crazily as he noticed Ruki’s blush. Slap a stupid grin on his face in addition to the crazy heart dance and the result would be the reaction Reita had as he heard Ruki say, “Okay.”

Kneeling on one knee, Reita threw his hands in the air with a victorious “YES!” He quickly stood up and grabbed Ruki’s sleeve, dragging Ruki out of the parlor as he said, “Bye Aoi-san! We’re going to buy Ruki a phone!”

------------------------------

“I can’t believe you made me do that!” Ruki whined.

“Aw, don’t be that way!” Reita said with a pout. They had successfully purchased a cell phone for Ruki and made it back to his apartment, which is where they were right now. Reita didn’t realize Ruki would have a problem with crossing a different street. He just figured if you’ve crossed one, you’ve crossed them all. Nope. As soon as they reached a different intersection on their way to the electronics store, Ruki had panicked and huddled against the nearest wall. After lots of calming words and lots of dragging, Reita managed to get them to the store and back to Ruki’s apartment.

Pulling out his own cell phone along with Ruki’s new one, Reita flipped both the phones open and started programming his number into Ruki’s phone. “What are you doing?” Ruki asked as he scooted closer to Reita on the couch and leaned over to look at the phones.

“I’m putting my number in your phone! See?” he showed Ruki the entry, titled “Reita♥”, for his phone number. “All you have to do to call me is go to your address book, find my entry, and press this green button. You don’t even need to memorize my number!”

Ruki gasped with amazement and said, “I only have to press one button?”

Chuckling, Reita answered, “Yep, only one button. Let’s see here… My number looks a little lonely all by itself, so how about I give you Uruha’s number too?”

“Would he mind?” Ruki asked.

Scoffing, Reita said, “Of course not!” and finished programming Uruha’s number into Ruki’s phone. “You should ask Kai for his number the next time he visits. We can put the tattoo parlor’s number in here next Thursday!” Reita said as he smiled and closed the phones. Holding out Ruki’s phone for him to take, Reita said, “Here you go.”

Ruki shook his head and pulled away from Reita slightly. “Can’t I just use your phone?”

Reita laughed at Ruki’s question. “I have to use my phone, Ruki! This is just a different type of phone. It’s still a phone, just like mine! Here, take it,” he said as he shook the phone. Ruki just shook his head again. “Ruki!” he laughed, “Just take the phone, it’s okay!”

He reached for Ruki’s wrist to put the phone in his hand, but Ruki quickly pulled his arm away and crawled to the opposite end of the couch, shouting, “Don’t touch me!”

Ouch. Ruki might as well have slapped Reita in the face; it probably would have hurt less than hearing Ruki say that. Reita forced a smile as he tried to ignore the clenching around his heart and softly said, “I’m sorry, Ruki.” They were silent for a bit until Reita said, “Listen, I need to go home now. I’ll leave your phone on the couch for you. I don’t work tomorrow. So I’ll come back and help you with your phone.”

------------------------------

Reita supposed a night’s sleep took care of most of his unhappiness, because he woke up ready to see Ruki again. He hadn’t forgotten about how much it hurt for Ruki to deny him contact, but it was a new day and Reita would rather spend it happily with Ruki than moping.

None of it really seemed to matter once he saw Ruki smiling, anyway. Ruki’s smile was contagious and Reita caught a case of the smiles from him. “I had a brilliant idea,” he said as he walked into Ruki’s apartment, following the usual routine of placing his shoes neatly beside Ruki’s.

“Let me decide how brilliant it is once you tell it to me,” Ruki replied, laughing as he took a seat on his couch.

With a roll of his eyes, Reita joined Ruki on the couch and said, “It might not actually be brilliant, but it would be funny! We should talk to each other on the phone!”

“You’re not the first person to come up with that idea, Reita,” Ruki laughed.

Groaning, Reita explained, “No! I meant, since you’re still not comfortable with the phone, we could talk to each other on the phone while we’re both in the same place!”

Raising an eyebrow, Ruki asked, “You mean like while we’re both sitting on the couch?!”

“Well we can start there, but then let’s say one of us can move into a different room later. Don’t you think that will help you?”

“Well, it does sound helpful…” Ruki trailed off.

“Great!” Reita said as he pulled his phone out of his pocket. “Where’s your phone?”

“Um,” Ruki said, followed by a pause. “I put it under the couch cushions.”

He tried not to laugh, he really did, but Reita couldn’t stop the laughter from escaping. “You put it under the couch cushions? WHY?”

“I didn’t like looking at it!” Ruki explained with a pout.

“What am I going to do with you?” Reita chuckled and then stood up to search under the cushions for Ruki’s cell phone. He found it underneath the cushion between them and held the phone out for Ruki as Reita sat down again.

Ruki took the cell phone with a sigh. “Alright, how do I use this thing?” he asked as he turned the object in his hands and inspected it. Reita scooted closer to Ruki and showed him which buttons to press to call his phone. Once Ruki understood what to do to call Reita, he pressed the appropriate buttons and held the phone to his ear.

…And then he squeaked and threw the phone at Reita’s chest. “Ruki, what the hell!?” Reita asked with laughter.

“It’s noisy!”

What? Ruki had talked on a phone before. He knew how it sounded! “What’s noisy?!” Reita asked.

“Your phone! It scared me!” Ruki explained.

OH, yeah! Reita’s phone rang! It hadn’t occurred to Reita that the ringing of his phone might startle Ruki, but it had startled him. The result was Ruki squeaking as he threw his phone at Reita’s chest. Reita picked up Ruki’s phone and asked him to try again. This time when Reita’s phone rang it didn’t scare Ruki, so Reita answered and said, “Ruki! I’m so glad you called!”

“You told me to,” Ruki said into his phone.

Rolling his eyes, Reita said, “I was trying to make the phone conversation realistic!”

“Well, I feel silly talking to you on the phone when I can hear what you’re saying anyway!”

Sighing, Reita suggested, “Why don’t you go in another room then?”

Ruki nodded and walked down his hall into his bedroom (or what Reita assumed was his bedroom.) They spent an hour just talking on the phone in Ruki’s apartment. They talked about everything from music-discovering they both loved the Sex Pistols-to giraffes and why they have such long necks. It didn’t really matter to Reita what they talked about; Ruki was talking on the phone longer than he ever had before.

When Reita was walking home that day, his phone rang and he was surprised to see it was Ruki calling. Flipping his phone open he asked, “Ruki, is everything alright?”

“Yeah, everything’s fine,” Ruki answered. “I just called to say thank you.” Ruki hung up before Reita even had a chance to respond, but that couldn’t stop his grinning. Nothing could.

A/N:  Did anyone else imagine Ruki singing Stevie Wonder at the end? Or was that just me?
