A/N: SJM challenge theme #4, Kittens. I just really like pandas. And EunHae/HyukHae/HaeHyuk/whatever you want to call them. I personally prefer HyukHae. AU, little kid fic, because I can :)

I made up the babysitter, Miyeon.

my pandas, your kittens
          {and the truth about babies}

Hyukjae doesn't understand why Miyeon lies to Donghae, why she tells him that there are kittens at the zoo because-unless you count the lion or tiger cubs-there aren't. Every time he's gone, with his parents or sister or whoever was willing to take him, he's never seen a kitten. With the exception of a stray orange tabby last month, another trip with Donghae. So maybe that's why Donghae's more willing to jump in the backseat and kick his legs like he has a caffeine problem while their babysitter Miyeon pleads with the two of them to put her seat belts on so that she doesn't get fired for breaking them in a car accident.

"Noona, do you wanna crash your car?" Donghae asks, because Donghae likes to be difficult with her. Hyukjae assumes it's because he thinks she's pretty. And she is, but they're just a pair of seven-year-olds.

She sighs, tapping lime green fingernails as she grimaces through too much lip gloss. "No, Donghae, I don't."

Donghae just laughs like he's made the funniest joke ever, and he looks over at Hyukjae, buckled in and staring at the dirty, crumb-embedded floor where the bottoms of his sneakers face. His eyes are fuzzy, must be thinking. But Hyukjae is smart enough to know his best friends wants him to laugh along, so he does.

He's really thinking about the pandas. Big, fluffy, black and white, cuddly pandas.

A huge grin breaks across Hyukjae's face, and Donghae just looks at him, thinking that if Hyukjae happened to be a girl and girls didn't happen to have cooties, he might kiss that huge grin.

But little boys aren't supposed to think that way about other boys, so he'll think about kittens. Wait. Those are little girl things.

Donghae thinks about his hero instead. Spiderman. He nods to himself.

Hyukjae doesn't like having Miyeon's hand separating him from Donghae's hand, but she insists that she be the barrier that'll keep the three of them from getting separated. She insists that it's the best way to deal with the two of them breaking out into random mini wrestling matches to prove their strength. Miyeon had honestly had enough of Donghae bragging over winning. He'd only come out victorious thanks to Hyukjae being the width of a sapling.

Donghae doesn't like the barrier, either. He pouts, because he wants to walk next to Hyukjae, wants to poke him and put him in a childishly powerful headlock and drag him around until they can find the kittens. Because Donghae really does want to find those kittens.

"There here somewhere," he says, before pulling Miyeon towards a zookeeper easily recognizable in his faded green shorts and khaki shirt, along with a neatly placed name tag on the right side of his chest. And Donghae likes his hat, that kind of hat you think of when you go on a safari. "Hey, mister, where are the kittens?"

The man blinks, and Miyeon starts to apologize.

"Did you mean cubs?" the man smiles at the flustered babysitter and crouches in front of the two boys. "Lions, tigers?"

Bears? Oh my! Hyukjae giggles internally, his lips twisting into a repressed goofy grin.

"No," Donghae punches out the word, he's not too partial to the man's tone. "Kittens. Like, meow meow. Like the ones Heechul-hyung has," he attempts to explain this way, but Hyukjae reaches around Miyeon and tells his best friend that the zookeeper doesn't know Heechul-hyung, nor his fancy for purring felines.

The zookeeper apologizes, he roughs up Donghae's hair in an attempt to be like Yesung-hyung, but fails at it, and Donghae wants to kick him. Hyukjae wants to pitch in on that as well, but Miyeon is attempting to distract them with the idea of ice cream, chocolate or strawberry sliding down their tongues. It's only half-working.

Miyeon has to let go of their hands when they reach the ice cream vendor. She needs to be able to pull out her wallet, extract a few bills, and get her change back. For just those few seconds-barely even a minute-she prays that the two of them can hold still long enough and not run away.

It takes ten seconds of Donghae bouncing up and down and Hyukjae staring off somewhere with his mouth parted for them to do exactly what she feared. At least, it's ten seconds until she turns back around to face the two boys and the vendor is gaping at the lack of said boys. Coins hit the ground, and Miyeon is about ready to scream, to pull her dyed chocolate brown hair out, extensions and all.

Donghae's fingers grips around the back of Hyukjae's oversized Pokémon t-shirt and brings him to a halt like a horse gone wild. "Waiiiit," he tugs Hyukjae backwards. "Where are you doing?"

"I saw it!" Hyukjae jerks forward this time, trying to go on his merry way.

"Huh?"

"Your kitty," Hyukjae gives him widened eyes and a serious pout.

Donghae's mouth forms an oval. "Where?"

"It was that way," bony arm stretches to his right, "but now I don't see it."

"Oh," he tries not to pout, tries really hard.

"I'm sorry," the pout on Hyukjae's face is definitely there, definitely trembling, and Donghae wants to tell him to stop. Put him in that childishly strong headlock he's thought about before or wrestle him into stopping that pouting bottom lip.

Donghae reaches for the smaller hand next to his, but hesitates. "It's okay, Hyukkie."

The lip is still trembling. "And where's Noona?"

It's just then that Donghae looks around, in all directions, and realizes that Miyeon is no where within his line of vision. Same goes for the ice cream vendor, and panic seizes both little boys by the laces of their sneakers, sending them crashing towards each other. Clinging.

Donghae's fingers dig into Pikachu's face on Hyukjae's shirt, crumpling up the electric pink cheeks against his anxious palm. Hyukjae's arms wrap around him like needy vines, and they stand there, huddled for what seems like an eternity.

But at least they're together, Donghae thinks, even though he knows Hyukjae wants to see the pandas as badly as he wanted to see the kittens. Not those lion cubs, kittens-

No. Be a man, Donghae. Spiderman wouldn't want to frolic with kittens. He reasons with himself and starts to walk, with Hyukjae still warm against his skin, and Pikachu's cloth face still scrunched up in his hand. The only thing new besides a destination in his mind is the damp patch of liquid from Hyukjae's eyes on his shoulder.

"Where're we going?"

"Pandas," Donghae says, affirmative in statement, eyebrows pushed together.

"She's having a baby?" Hyukjae's eyes are over-sized marbles. Practically golf balls by now.

The woman clad in the same getup as the zookeeper from before nods and smiles with white pearls in her mouth. "See how she looks a little fat?" she points out, and the boys follow her finger. They give her an 'uh-huh' in unison and watch the large lady panda move along, languid movements that make Donghae feel like moving at slow camera speed for the rest of the day. Lady Zookeeper concludes, "In a couple months, she'll have a beautiful little baby."

Donghae recycles his best friend's words. "She's having a baby?"

"Is it gonna have a safe landing?" Hyukjae bites his puffy lip.

The woman's mouth hangs open.

"Babies come from shooting stars, right?"

"Um," she has to think for a while, wondering whether it's alright to let someone else's kid know the facts of life. Especially when he's so small. Where are his parents, anyway? "Um, are you parents here somewhere? Are you boys lost?"

"He's not my brother," Donghae points. "Our mommies and daddies are different people."

"Is there supposed to be an-"

"Hyukjae! Donghae!"

Miyeon swoops in out of nowhere, cuts off Lady Zookeeper and scoops the boys into her arms like she's a mother, reunited after several long years of melodramatic panic. In reality, Hyukjae knows Miyeon's sighing in relief over knowing her paycheck won't be tugged out of sight, and it's only been twenty minutes since they last saw her face.

"We're going home," she says, taking both their hands. "Say goodbye, boys."

They wave, always in unison, to Lady Zookeeper, and she returns it. But Donghae wants to stay, wants to know her answer to his question. By the time Miyeon's dragged the two of them back to her car and gotten them settled side-by-side, seat belts on like death grips, Donghae's itching for an answer. So he might as well bring it up, mid-drive.

He fills his lungs and shouts, "Noona, where do babies come from?"

When Miyeon doesn't answer and starts looking petrified with all the things she could or should say floating through her mind, Donghae bounces in the seat that really isn't made for bouncing, and Hyukjae begins to laugh at him because he just remembered their scared faces from before-from when they'd been by themselves, and how stupid Donghae had looked.

A car filled with whines for an answer on the science of babies and laughter of scrunched up faces fills up the car on the whole ride home. Miyeon feels her hair getting grayer every second.

That next Monday at school, Donghae is screaming silently and wincing and swimming in his thoughts. They sit around a table with their work books open. When Siwon asks him what he did that weekend, the zoo gets mumbled, and then something about Heechul-hyung before Donghae suddenly gets very quiet again and very red-faced. Hyukjae pokes him with a wary finger, and then watches Donghae explode, bug-eyed and all.

"BABIES DO NOT COME FROM SHOOTING STARS."

Writing Suju as little kids is always fun for me. This was actually rather difficult to write, but somehow I managed to finish it at a relatively normal pace for me. I couldn't seem to leave it alone, I couldn't focus on my homework until this was completed :\

My friend told me that before her parents gave her the real story, they told her babies came from shooting stars and whenever parents want a child, they just wish for one and the baby comes zooming down to them! :D
