(913 words)

A/N: This is for wickedlove13  because I love writing you HanChul, and I hope you like this, mah dear. Siwon just kind of jumped into this since I'm craving SiHanChul, but it's not really an ot3 fic, so :\ …It's AU, because I like AU fics too much. SJM challenge, #50 Caramel. Not really that edited, please forgive me >.<

i’ll miss you like stars in the day

Heechul truly starts to doubt Hankyung's ability to remember dates when he's in Japan, and he's filming some low-budget movie opposite a girl with horrible Japanese who happens to be named Miyuko (he doesn't quite understand her, or how she could he so pretty-prettier than him? Hell no). His apartment is pretty nice, not amazing, but not crawling with cockroaches or rats-although he gets the occasional hamster through the hole in the wall of his bedroom, since the little girl with short pigtails next door can't seem to ever remember to keep that pet of hers in its cage, or just simply block its main mode of exit.

But back to the remembering dates issue. Heechul knows of Hankyung's Korean, and knows of it being something along the lines of good, but not quite there yet. Still, Heechul is darn sure that he communicated his birthday right when Hankyung first asked. July 10th, Hankyung, I was born in a nice clean hospital on July 10th. Remember that shit.

So why, on a fresh April day-the first day of the month-does Heechul open the door to find a package of caramel candy sitting at the welcome mat, accompanied by a card that reads 'Happy Birthday, Heechul!'?

There's no time difference between Seoul and Tokyo, so Heechul takes the candy indoors, slams the door shut, and calls.

"Are you cheeky or just stupid?" Heechul asks as soon as Hankyung answers the phone, his voice croaking with the sound of just waking up. "And why are you still in bed?"

"It's 7 am, Heechul," Hankyung sounds partially muffled by a pillow, it seems plausible. "I didn't have to be up for another hour today…"

Heechul checks the clock on the wall, and it very clearly reads 8:02 am. "…But Seoul and-"

"I'm in China right now."

"Um, why?"

"Do I need a reason to want to visit my parents when I'm off of work?"

Heechul pauses, but he doesn't really need to. "I guess not," he bites the dry skin off his bottom lip. He forgot to use chapstick before going to bed last night. "But back to the point. Are you trying to be funny, or are you just plain dumb?"

"I don't quite…what?"

"It's not my birthday."

"I know," Hankyung grunts from grogginess, but he does it like he's a bit surprised. "Oh, you mean the candy. Um, there's a story behind that."

"Do tell," Heechul starts to unwrap one of them, the crinkling of the clear plastic wrapper being the only noise in his ear until Hankyung speaks again.

First, he sighs, then, mumbles something in Chinese that Heechul interprets as cussing-but who knows? Heechul sure doesn't. "I wanted to send you just the candy, the caramel, with a card with your name on it, and my name as the sender, of course," another sigh. "But the stupid people at the stupid candy store said I needed a message. I couldn't think of one, so I just paid and asked them to please, just leave it that way."

"So they just slapped on a 'Happy Birthday' for shits and giggles?"

Hankyung is probably shrugging on the other side of the connection. "I guess."

Heechul darts out his tongue to lick the caramel. "Cool story. You can go back to sleep now."

"Too late, I'm already awake now," it sounds like Hankyung is sitting up, Heechul can hear the creak of the mattress through a half-lousy connection. "So, how's your Japanese?"

"Better than my co-star," Heechul scoffs.

"Is she…?"

Heechul looks at the part of the candy he licked; he notices how it shines differently from the rest of it. "Yeah, she's native. From Osaka."

"Weird."

"Definitely-oh," Heechul removes the phone from his ear at the sound of a beep, and he sees the familiar flashing of his co-star's name on the screen. "She's calling right now. Gotta talk later, okay?"

"Alright. Have fun. Miss you-"

"Miss you, too," Heechul mutters it quickly, and presses another button that pulls Hankyung's voice away, replaces it with Miyuko and her voice isn't nearly as beautiful against his ears. Suddenly Heechul misses home, and his stomach churns. "Hi."

It takes her five minutes to blab on and on about something Heechul can't quite understand, and something he doesn't particularly care about. And then it takes another six minutes before Heechul gets a chance to say goodbye so he can get his mind and his ears away from this girl, this high-pitched voice and the squealing, the bad grammar that even Heechul grimaces at-lucky for her, she's got the looks, she can act.

It's barely even 8:20, and Heechul needs some kind of contact again. He thinks about calling Hankyung, but when he dials numbers, it's a different set. And Siwon's on the phone.

"Hyung, hyung, are you there?"

Heechul finally pops the caramel in his mouth-the one that's been sitting in between his two fingers for too long, he decides. And if Hankyung bought them for him, he damn well should eat them. "Yeah, I am."

"Is everything okay? How's Japan?"

One sigh, one frown, another candy. "Things could be better. But they could be worse, too. Japan is nice. You'd like it. Hankyung would like it."

"Next time, you should take us with you. Take him with you."

Heechul sighs again. "I should," he chews, and his whole mouth tastes sweet. He wishes Hankyung were there to taste it, too. "Next time, I will."

I can't stop writing right now, seriously. And gah, I need to sleep D:

Miyuko isn't an actually actress, I just made her up for this-unless you know a Japanese actress who can't speak properly, who has this name.
