Raven and Kathy were officially moved in!

Okay, not everything was done and most of their stuff was still at Eliot's, but they'd gotten a lot of work done painting and assembling furniture and most of what was left could be moved over a bit at a time. Raven was liberally splattered with paint even by the time the pre-party people arrived. On the one hand, at least her clothes wouldn't stain.

On the other, the latex paint was proving a pain to wash off her scales, too.

It was even worse with when Kathy attempted to sneak up on Raven and swipe a paint brush down her back.

This would end well.

This time last year, Kathy would have gotten an startled squeak and then playful retaliation. Now, Kathy got a full throated roar and a retaliation that included claws and fangs. Raven didn't go full bear, but "defend with death" was still very much her primary setting.

Good thing Kathy was fast?

Kathy's brain shifted into danger mode without her even thinking about it. She clacked her teeth in response even as she flung herself backwards into a handspring.

When she was back on her feet, she looked haunted. Not even by Raven's terrifying response but by her own. Why would she clack?!

Raven took a second swipe when she heard that clack, her scales going dense and bite-proof -- and then her brain managed to catch up with her eyes and send out NOPE THAT'S A FRIEND STOP IT signals, leaving Raven wide-eyed and gasping, but no longer trying to kill anything.

"Right," Raven said, eyes a little wider and voice a little higher than was strictly natural for her. She took a breath and forced her voice, at least, back into her natural register. "Right," she said again. "New house rule, no sneaking up on each other."

"That sounds good," Kathy said, letting out a shaky breath. "We are...not ready for sneaking, no."

"Right." Raven was stuck on that word. "Not even close." She still hadn't managed to de-plate. "I am so sorry. I didn't -- are you bleeding at all?"

There was usually a lot of blood after she did things like that.

Kathy looked down at herself. There were four scores on her arms, red marks on her skin. In one, tiny beads of blood welled up, a shallow cut. "Not much," she said, showing Raven her arm. "You just barely grazed me. I--I should have been faster."

Or not been an idiot at all.

"Oh god," Raven said again, staring at that spot of blood like she'd managed to open one of Kathy's arteries. "I'll get a bandaid. Do we have bandaids? We have to have bandaids right a first aid kit is basic housemaking 101. . . ."

Oh hey she was babbling.

"I don't think we have one," Kathy said, shaking her head. "I can't believe I didn't think to get a first aid kit! But it's okay, Raven, really!" She wiped off the blood with her thumb, sticking it into her mouth without thinking.

Oh wait, terrible plan.

"I have no idea," Kathy admitted. "It was just...reflex."

And she was filing 'Why do I even have that reflex still?' under 'Things I Don't Actually Want to Know For $100, Alex.'

"I'm so, so sorry. First I startled you and then I made it worse."
