I think my brain stopped comprehending the script thing when it said that Riley was hot... I think this was done out of self preservation...

When large chunks of the AYW script leaked out to the spoiler community back in Season 6, we all assumed it was meant as parody... and were extremely shocked that they played it completely straight.

Even though I was not having very many happy fluffy thoughts about Buffy at the time, the episode still made me horribly offended on her behalf. Because they certainly gave the strong implication that Buffy *was* in the wrong in the relationship with Riley, and that if she'd been a better girlfriend, then obviously he wouldn't have been driven into the arms of vampire hookers.

Petrie really let his love for MB and Riley mess with his brain... and, sadly, Marti wasn't as good at rewriting episodes as Joss was.

Or it is a parody because how are we to take this thing seriously? It's interesting that Joss rewrote BENEATH YOU (and told James that Petrie's writing was basically shit)

I wasn't online at that time -- were any of the Mutant Enemy writers surprised when they learned that most of the fans thought it was a parody? And did Mutant Enemy ever acknowledge that most of the audience hated the episode?

I wasn't online either, so I have no clue. I just know when I watched it, that it annoyed the crap out of me, and nothing has changed.

Description from shooting script:
...RILEY FINN. Looking intense, fit, and more handsome than ever in his stylin' lightweight kevlar battle gear (the new scar he's sporting above his right eye don't hurt none). ... Riley stands, dressed like a commando, completely unself-conscious about the line forming behind him as Buffy just stares at him blankly. She's stunned. ... the only one Buffy sees, is handsome Black Ops combat specialist Riley Finn....

That was the point where Petrie ejaculated all over the script and had to type the whole thing over.

"James is an extraordinary actor," praises Tom. "He's a great person.... James is probably one of the strongest actors we've ever had on the show."

So, at least it's not just us!

Then why the f***ing hell is he not getting any parts worth mentioning? You'd think someone would hire him for something. Heck if Dominic Purcell can star in two shows you'd think James could get more than Smallville or Shadow Puppets.
*kicks the television producers...again*
