Back in pre-industrial days, kids were routinely apprenticed out quite young or they were "fostered". Few kids actually stayed at home with their parents past 11 or 12 (or so I've read).
I wish I'd had the chance to escape my parents and go off to college at 17.

That's how it was at home, too. I left home at 17, granted it was to go to college, but still...
