A fact finding mission

What is the name of your favorite cookbook(s)? Why do you prefer it over others? If you don't cook from one, is that a favorite in your past, one that encouraged you to try your cooking wings, as it were.

Is there cookbook that you would never prepare a recipe from, but you keep it anyhow?

I have a few cookbooks my grandma gave me, but mostly I don't use them. If I need a recipe, I look around on the Internet and try to find something that approximates what I want to make. Often I'll find several versions of a recipe and try to triangulate the common factors. Sometimes I'll look at the SomethingAwful Goons with Spoons forum for recipe ideas. I do have one absinthe book that I want to try out once I find a decent cheap absinthe...

I have absinthe! It's all cheap knock-off stuff in the states. What can I make? :)

Apparently it goes good with pineapple and morally irrelevant decadence...

Funny thing about cook books, they are a little like music albums. One or two songs you like and the rest you never listen to. I like my Sandra-Lee Semi-Homemade cookbook. I adore Alton Brown's show. I've never made anything from either. I will not make anything from Joy of Cooking except popovers.

My current favorite cookbook is the Good Housekeeping from 1949. It is instructional from the ground up; What to look for in the store, how much to buy per person, how to cut it up, how to cook it and how to serve it. Impressive.

Due to the poor economic times there has apparently been a surge of interest in rationing cook books. Go figure.

I'm feeling guilty I threw out all my great aunt's saurcraut recipes. I hate the stuff but it is my family heritege after all. :/
