Castell Deudraeth isn't a castle, it's just a hotel. That said, there are plenty of real castles where she is, which are far more interesting to explore. :-)
It is a lot like the Village - fill of nooks and crannies. We had the option of staying there, but the other hotel had more of a' Prisoner' feel to us.
This the a short history of the castle from the Portmeirion page
Gerald of Wales recorded the construction of the original Castell Deudraeth on a rocky outcrop above the present village. It was established by the sons of Gruffudd ap Maredydd ap Cynan around the time of his visit in 1188.
Gerald of Wales wrote: "We crossed the Traeth mawr and the Traeth Bychan. These are two arms of the sea, one large and one small. Two stone castles have been built there recently. The one called Castell Deudraeth belongs to the sons of Cynan and is situated in the Eifionydd area, facing the northern Mountains."
When we were here last time, we toured castle after castle, as requested by our GD who was with us. When we got to London, we asked her what she wanted to do and she said, "No more castles, please." She'd had her fill. I'm not much for them, despite having a family castle in Scotland.
It's too late to re-shoot the scene, but it was still fun!
Hard packed sand? When I was there in May I was sinking into it almost ankle deep whenever I stood still. I had to keep moving otherwise they'd have had to send a rover out to rescue me!
It was very hard pack, almost cement like. I wonder if the heat had anything to do with it. It was pretty warm there, as compared to here (Copenhagen), where it is cold and drizzly at least for the moment.

I fear all my hip replacements and faulty knees have probably reduced my ability to go hiking through them for the future.
Perhaps the Big Guy will wear his Number 6 blazer and agree to reshoot that defiant stance. :)
