My father, two uncles, a great uncle and my paternal grandfather were veterans, albeit my paternal grandfather was a veteran in the Czarist army while the rest served in one of the branches of the US military.
Every one of them passed away from age or complications of one disease or another (most, if not all, of the family members that served in the US military served during WWII and my paternal grandfather served as a guard in Siberia, leaving before the outbreak of WWI and the fall of Czarist Russia) so it gives you a rough guesstimate of their ages.
There's an office in our student union that assists both active service"men" and veterans with whatever they may need (within reason.)
