LJ why you gotta be dis way?

Here's the issue: I love LJ a lot. It's been my e-home since I was fourteen, and I sincerely dislike the idea of changing that. However, LJ also has some security issues, especially when it comes to public posts. I really have a problem with the "share this" button. I find it irritating, it slows down my computer, and the fact that my posts ( Read more... )

planning for the future, probably shouldn't be on lj, sob, sadface, * time for a poll, i am: gonna choke a bitch

I haven't voted, because I haven't gone through six drafts of the pros-cons chart yet but in case you weren't already aware of it, I just wanted to mention that Dreamwidth does allow its users to do custom CSS programming of their journal layouts. Are there other features of the site that would invariably make DW layouts look different from some of the LJ layouts that you like?

I know Dreamwidth allows for customization, but I don't think you can use some of the styles I really like here at LJ (like Smooth Sailing or FlexiSquare or anything like that).

Haha, you know I am lazy and loyal and will stick through LJ, and I think overall you wouldn't be too keen on the switch? And while I doubt people are sharing your posts to Facebook, I know it's a matter of principles. In your "this lj is friends only!" post you could always explain the reasoning?

I dunno, you didn't leave me a dithering voting choice, so I went with that one. Hope it helped!

I didn't leave a dithering voting choice because I know you and wanted advice, as I am already dithering.

I like the idea of explaining the reasoning. Ugh. IDKKKK.

I've only ever done F-List only. It works for me.

I'll admit that I've completely ignored the "Share This!" button and what it could do, so for the most part your security concerns are foreign to me. Do you get notification when your posts are shared elsewhere? (I mean automatically, not just because people tell you they're doing it.) And do you get to see any of the conversation that's sparked on the other site through your post?

I completely understand what you mean about preferring to be open and part of the broader community (not f-list only), so I guess I would choose that over coding, as I'm assuming you could find other ways/places to play with coding. (So: Switch to Dreamwidth.) That said, I'm not actually submitting it in the poll, because I would miss you if you weren't on lj and I'm still trying to think if there's some way for you to enjoy the lj community, including when it's shared to other sites, without going f-list only.

I'm not sure about the notification/conversations. I assume that I could, but even that said it makes me intensely uncomfortable.

I realize you've thought about this a lot and probably have a good answer, but I wanna ask the question anyway before voting in the poll: since you already f-lock all the posts you don't want everyone to see, and since you seem to be careful with what you post publicly because you do expect others who don't know you to visit your journal, what exactly is the biggest issue with the "Share This" button? It makes linking possible from other sites to your journal entries (at least, that's what I assume it does); but you already anticipate people you don't know seeing your entries. And, does the button do more than share a link? Okay, just checked that and I guess it does. If the issue is that you can't keep an eye on your journal's traffic as well, or know who could be linking from where, then that I can totally understand. But, just curious.

Here's a few things:

- Most of the content I post publicly is meant to be shared over LJ. Not Facebook or Myspace or Twitter or whatever.
- If it were just Facebook or Myspace or Twitter I would feel pretty okay about but, but the fact is the "share this" button allows access to my public posts via a third party info-gathering site. I'm not okay with this.
- Also, those posts are archived on that third party website indefinitely.
- Honestly? Part of it is that I can't code for the button, so it keeps fucking up my layout no matter what I do.
- Mostly, I know I'm in no way popular enough to have this be much of an issue, but it makes me uncomfortable, and the fact that I feel uncomfortable in my own blog is not an Okay Thing.

Aaaah that is a shitty thing to do, LJ. (I think you may have mentioned this to me before now..ergh, sorry) Also can't blame you being annoyed about the coding; that shit is not simple as is, and having something that could screw it up be a PERMANENT part of your LJ...hmm. Well, I'd go with what's suggested above by stormantia and stay here as friends-locked, but explain exactly why. Now here's my reasoning, some of it repeated from yours above. One of the major reasons you are on LJ is because you want to keep in contact with friends/give updates to people you know, right? Well, most of those people probably don't have a Dreamwidth and won't be getting one. For example, myself; if you get one, I might get one just to get updates on yours. But I will most probably never post to it, and just keep posting here. As for the reason "because I ( ... )
