fanfiction. it is not as easy as you think.

I have been following the latest fanfiction wank a little more closely than I actually intended. I think a lot of people have done a fabulous job of debunking a lot of this madness, thus I don't feel the need to write an overall response of my own (and, really, considering that 20 people read my posts, tops, there wouldn't be much of a point ( Read more... )

people suck, keyboard smashing shows my rage, !too tired to figure out better tags, oh fuck off

Makes sense to me, and I actually agree with you a lot; if you have your own characters with their own voices, it's different than trying to get inside another person's character's skin to write them. Maybe that's part of why OCs are so popular, they give a writer an opportunity to write their own character and the show/book/etc.'s characters at the same time, but focus on their OC (if they want to), or at the least have a character upon whom they can fall back as someone they necessarily don't have to worry about writing ooc nearly as much.

Hahaha I totally know what you mean about monologuing to yourself at night unless you write it down.

And yeah, people need to chill about assigning labels of THIS IS EASIER/THIS IS HARDER in terms of writin'. Blanket statements never really work. Also, people need to chill about fanfiction in general.

Actually, people need to chill about the internet in general.

But yes! Good post :)

Also I know the real reason why you're sad you can't write fanfiction is because you want to write Annabeth and Percy making kissy faces at one another.

original fic lets you create your own characters, find their own voices, create your own world, and yes, that's challenging, and it requires a lot of research and a lot of creativity and a lot of just general keeping facts straight. Fanfic, on the other hand, requires a lot of empathy with the characters. A good fanfic writer will be able to understand the character's perspective they're writing from, and realistically imitate their voice.

THIS THIS THIS

I personally write both, and find each challenging in their own special ways.

I don't have anything to say except that I struggle with both, but I wanted to share this with you because it reminded me of those late nights in middle school (esp the one where we sang the national anthem as though we were cats):

Also, because it's too damned funny not to share...
