Your "I don't care" contradicts everything else you say afterward. Obviously, you do care. Are you saying you can still enjoy the picture regardless of the history behind it, or are you saying something else?
Personally, now every time I look at it I will think it's gross. Also personally, if I could kick Polanski in the balls, I would gladly do so.
I don't care that the picture depicts a sexual assault. I don't think it's gross. I enjoy it for the iconic moment it symbolizes, and then ponder the reality of the history behind it and what that represents. That is not cognitive dissonance; it is accepting the non-binary nature of my reaction to art and the ambiguous nature of life itself. As I said, good art is not simple, which is part of what makes it good.
I do not condone Polanski or anyone else I mentioned. I would love to kick Polanski in the balls, and angrily confront everyone who supports him. I like a lot of Hitchcock movies and dislike others. I'm ambivalent about enjoying the works of Picasso and Gauguin knowing how they treated their models and lovers.
Nothing in life is black-or-white, especially emotional reactions.

Oh I agree. I'm not proposing you need to feel the same way as I do, and I apologize if it came out sounding that way. Your statement just read as 'off' to me in light of the rest of your post. But your explanation makes sense, even if I don't agree with it emotionally. ...If that makes sense.
Of course it makes sense. I never expect anyone to agree with me when I post stuff like this. :) I'm glad we can express diverging viewpoints and then agree to disagree; it makes for good conversation.
