The heroine says to the quirky scientist, regarding an antagonist: "You're helping her? You're helping her? She was under observation at a psychiatric facility!Yah ( Read more... )

I'd been wondering about Warehouse 13. Other than that burr under your saddle -- which I can totally understand galling you, by the way, -- how is it?

It's not bad. It's a bit "X-Files", a bit "Torchwood", a bit "Bones", a bit Indiana Jones, a bit this, a bit that, and sprinkle a bit of steampunk garnish on top. I'm not fond of the hero and heroine who are practically screaming "WE'RE SUPPOSED TO HAVE UNRESOLVED SEXUAL TENSION! SEE THE TENSION? SEE? SEE?" But the quirky scientist and his quirky science is what I watch for. Which means that I have no interest in the "meat" of the "A" plot and watch most closely at the start and finish of most episodes. But it is what it is, and I watch it for light entertainment without getting at all invested in it.

As if someone who's been broken and come out the other side isn't a more helpful insightful person than (I presume) one of the world's darlings who's never had a bad thing happen to her or hers.

Yeah. The implication is that just having been under psychiatric care means you're untrustworthy and unstable and possibly dangerous. *bristles*

Isn't that funny how that happens? And then people wonder why somebody didn't go get help from a professional instead of... doing things that automatically jump into my mind that I don't want to discuss.

If that last paragraph were the case the heroine could just as easily say "You're helping her? She's dangerous!" 'Under observation' means very little because it's so vague. Even 'she was in a psychiatric facility' is hugely open to possibilities. I'd buy 'she broke out of a psychiatric facility' as a plausible reason to be wary of someone, but even being properly admitted and then released could just mean a temporary lapse in managing problems, got help, is fine now.

Even "she was in a facility for the criminally insane!" wouldn't have irked me so much because it wouldn't have equated being a run-of-the-mill psychiatric patient with being a criminal.
