“You're not the slightest bit curious?” Mai gestured to the flyer .
“Should I be?” Naru didn't look up from his newspaper.
“Well, they're competition, aren't they?”
“They amended their flyer in crayon,” he noted scathingly, glancing over the top of his paper. “Hardly competition. I have no interest the going-ons of some amateur ghost hunter group.”
The steady sound of Lin's typing filled the silence as Mai remained where she was, standing at the edge of Naru's desk. She paused just long enough that he lowered the paper once more, affixing her with a stare as she shifted uncomfortably. His eyes narrowed.
“Did you have something you needed to add?”
“It's just...” Mai had seen too many examples of what could happen if people played around with the paranormal and were caught unaware by the consequences. “You're not worried that they might be getting themselves into something dangerous?”
“Again,” his eyes went back to his paper in a dismissive gesture. “I fail to see why that should be any concern of mine beyond the fact that it may result in more business.”
“Naru!” Mai slammed her hand down on his desk and the typing paused in the background. “I don't believe you. You'd just let innocent people hurt themselves?!”
“We're hardly responsible for taking care of every individual foolish enough to dabble in the paranormal.”
She frowned, disappointed, picking up the flyer as she left.
“You do realize,” Lin spoke up after the door had swung shut behind her. “That this can only end poorly.”
The young head of the SPR gave a sigh, pinching the bridge of his nose to ward off what was promising to be a spectacular headache.
“I know.”
