I know you will find this hard to believe, but Canadian college dorms aren't much different. Students all over the world never seem to have 2 spare coins to rub together.
Also, there is a reason why NZ prisons look like that (which doesn't have to do with more money), but you can probably figure that one out for yourself.

I guess you can't blame me if I do. Just a little bit. :) But I admit I'm curious now. A friend who goes to uni in London came visiting a few days back and she told me she is considered nothing less than a superhero for working part time while attending uni. I can't stop thinking "How do those people eat then?"
I'm actually really glad that NZ prisons look like that, and I really wish that more prisons would.

*nods* I couldn't have managed a part-time with my course schedule. It wouldn't have been worth it anyway. I made sure my marks were good enough for scholarships and bursaries, and I worked in the film industry during the summer (lots of overtime at union rates = raking in the dough.) Yes, I worked like a dog, but I could afford my own room and board.

May I ask for a rough estimate of scholarships that a person can get on average? I think there could be an answer there, given that ours are so pathetic that if you are lucky it covers travel fees (dorms are usually not located on campus) and dorm fees, but not much else.
I think it adds to the good side that you can see people taking it as a joke of life and enjoying beating their challanges with their creativity, even if the end result is still rather sucky.
