Jimmy Kimmel at his after-the-Oscars show: "Slum Dog Millionaire won best picture this year. It was the favorite going in. Looked like the only way it might lose was if it picked Sarah Palin as a running mate."

I do encourage you to see it. I saw Milk, a worthy contender, on Friday and found it to be very intense and moving. In a way it affected me more than Slum Dog -- probably because it's closer to me and I can see friends reflected in the characters. But Slum Dog does have more going for it than the exoticism of Bollywood. What the children go through in the slums is not glossed over. Some of the details we get are unsettling and grim. I'll stop now as I know you don't like reviews before seeing a movie. But I just want you to know that there is the kind of dimension there that one expects of a best picture.

I half-watched Jimmy Kimmel, but I missed that joke. Thanks for repeating - it's hilarious.
