The door creaked loudly as Rose Weasley pushed it open. Breathing in the cool night air, she made her way out of Hogwarts castle and onto the dewy lawns. She glanced up at the sky. There was a full moon, and the stars twinkled brightly, but for some reason they didn’t enchant her as they usually did.

Rose hadn’t been able to sleep. It was nearing twelve, so she had decided to get outside of the stuffy castle for some fresh air. She had been unusually lucky in making her way through Hogwarts without meeting anyone, but that wasn’t what was on her mind right now.

Since she went to bed, she hadn’t been able to stop thinking about Scorpius Malfoy, of all people. He was a Slytherin, and the son of her parents’ enemy. So why did her thoughts keep returning to dwell on him, and the few words he had said to her outside Potions?

‘Well, look, if it isn’t the filthy little Weasley,’ Selina Greengrass sneered, as Rose rushed up to the dungeons, afraid of being late. The Gryffindors all scowled at Selina as the bell rang, but seeing nothing interesting was going to happen, they went into the classroom.

‘Leave her alone, Selina,’ said a tired-sounding voice from behind Rose. Both girls turned, and they were equally surprised to see Scorpius looking at his cousin Selina with a disdainful look on his face. ‘What did she ever do to you?’

It seemed Selina had no retort for this, so she simply snorted in disgust and followed the other students into the classroom. Rose continued to stare at Scorpius, who she’d always thought to be a typical Slytherin, if not a little shy.

‘Sorry about her, Rose.’ Scorpius gave her a half smile and went into the dungeon as well, leaving her standing there utterly confused.

Rose was still confused now, and it had been almost twelve hours. She sat down at the edge of the lake to try and gather her thoughts. The night sky reflected off the water, and she glared at it as if it was the sky’s fault for making her this way.

If she was going to tell herself the truth, she had noticed Scorpius getting nicer and nicer to her over the past few months. He stopped to let her pass through doors first, he had laughed when she told a joke, and he had helped pick up her books when she dropped them once in the corridor …

Rose buried her face in her hands and groaned. Why couldn’t he just leave her alone? Granted, he bothered her a lot more in her mind than he did in real life, but it was the real life situations that caused him to never leave her thoughts.

Sighing, Rose leaned back to look at the sky again. What exactly was her obsession with Scorpius, anyway? His face swam into her mind for the hundredth time.

Wait, that wasn’t in her mind. Scorpius Malfoy was standing over her, smiling shyly. All the wind seemed to be knocked out of her, and her stomach flipped over.

‘Do - do you mind if I join you?’ he asked, rather nervously. Rose motioned to the grass beside her, not trusting herself to speak, and he lay down to gaze up at the sky with her.

‘I couldn’t sleep,’ Scorpius said. Rose turned to look at him.

‘Same here.’

It was obvious to both of them why they hadn’t been able to sleep, and they laughed. It was a very strange sight, a Gryffindor and a Slytherin lying by the lake at midnight and laughing together.

A faint bell sound from Hogsmeade announced to them that it was midnight. There was a loud bark from the Forbidden Forest. Rose looked back up at the sky, only to see the moon go behind a cloud.

‘You know, midnight isn’t as magical as you would expect,’ she said.

Scorpius smiled beside her, and she turned back to him. Her stomach flipped over again when she realised his face was only inches from hers on the grass.

‘I think it’s the most magical thing in the world,’ he said, and somehow Rose knew he wasn’t talking about midnight.

‘Scorpius, I - mmppff!’

She was cut off as Scorpius got rid of the last few inches between them and pressed his lips again hers. His mouth was softer than she had expected, and Rose was only shocked for a moment before she moved in closer and put her arms around his neck.

Scorpius had one hand in her hair and one around her waist. At that moment, Rose didn’t care that he was a Slytherin. She didn’t care what her family would say. She didn’t care that by principle, he should be her worst enemy. She just kissed him.

After what felt like years, they finally broke apart. Scorpius’s grey eyes gazed into her brown ones so intensely that she could barely breathe. Rose was suddenly conscious of his hand resting on her hip, and she blushed.

Scorpius smiled.

‘You’re so pretty when you blush,’ he whispered. This, of course, made Rose go even redder. She giggled, and they moved apart awkwardly. Rose stared up at the sky again, trying to clear her head of the fireworks that had began to explode in it in the past few minutes.

‘Rose?’ Scorpius asked. ‘Will - will you go to Hogsmeade with me next weekend?’

He said this all in a rush, looking away across the lake.

‘Don’t you realise,’ she said, ‘what people are going to say?’

Scorpius fixed his eyes on hers. Rose’s heart raced, and she found it impossible to look away.

‘I don’t care,’ he said truthfully. Rose considered this for a moment, even though her mind was already made up.

‘I don’t really care, either.’

Scorpius beamed at her, and reached out to push a lock of her brown hair behind her ear. His fingers lingered on her cheek for longer than necessary, and somehow his lips found hers again.

They only moved apart when an owl hooted loudly up above them, causing them both to jump and glare at the bird in question. It ignored their dirty looks, as did the sky when a slight drizzle of rain began to fall moments later. It wasn’t enough to make them run for cover, but enough to make them shiver in their dressing gowns.

‘What do you think of midnight now?’ Rose asked, a cheeky smile playing across her face. Scorpius raised his eyebrows at her.

‘I can’t stand it.’
