Well, the first time I read this story, I was struck by its depth: the intricacy of the plot and the characters' relationships made it delightful and rather mysterious, as well. (And speaking of mysterious, this review is going to be all the more difficult because I don't know who it's for...)

The way you introduce everyone is lovely, with Caius presenting himself by plopping himself on a barstool. I love the name Caius, too - Cassius was my favourite character in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar.

When Caius first hears the plot, I kind of did a double take when trying to figure out why what he was hearing caught his attention. That may be what you intended, but maybe Caius could go over it in his mind? For example Caius, whose eyes had slid comfortably shut, sat up and looked around him. Poison in his cup?

I appreciate, too, the research you must have done to write so well about the Praetorian Guard. That's another point of interest in the story.

Oh, I quite like the way you introduce Valerian. And this line: Caius quickly spilled ( ... )
