"Anne, you'll need to explain something to me now," Gilbert requested one afternoon.
"What's that?"
"How did you end up dying your hair green?"
"First of all, it was black. Or. . . at least it was supposed to be. Secondly, that was very random."
"I randomly thought of it."
"Okay," Anne began.
"Look, a peddler!" Anne pointed.
"Anne, we're not supposed to talk to peddlers. My mom will kill me!" Diana pled.
"Maybe she has some dye."
"Anne. . ."
"Diana. I can NOT have red hair. I simply can't. I need to get rid of any reason for Gilbert Blythe to make fun of me."
"So what's your solution?" Diana asked rolling her eyes.
"Dye my hair black."
"Anne, I have black hair and he makes fun of me."
"He calls you 'Raven'. That's hardly being made fun of."
"You're hopeless," Diana muttered.
"Would you girls like to buy anything?" the peddler asked as she approached them.
"No," Diana answered at the same time a more forceful Anne said,
"Yes!"
"What can I get you?" the peddler asked Anne, ignoring Diana.
"Do you have any hair dye?"
"Any particular color?"
"Maybe black?"
"I have one right here."
The peddler took a container from her basket.
"This will turn your hair a perfect jet black."
"Do you promise?"
"Yes."
"I'll take it. How much?"
Anne handed the peddler the money.
"Anne, this is such a bad idea!" Diana lamented as they walked away.
"Diana calm down. It's my hair, and my money. I don't see why you're so bent out of shape about it."
"Because you're my bosom friend and someone needs to look out for you since you obviously can't do it yourself."
"I am perfectly capable of taking care of myself, Diana Barry!"
Anne stormed off to dye her hair.
"Wow. So I guess that's the last time you buy anything from peddler's, eh?"
"Yes," Anne replied, laughing.
