That's interesting! The Bon Iver example is the kind of thing I am mostly looking for -- music that offends your sensibilities might be a better way to put it.
But the other examples are interesting too. I can't think of any music that makes me angry in that visceral way, though there is some music that makes me anxious or unsettled.
Ariel Pink (especially his live show) and Cocorosie both make me angry in a way that I don't think any other artist ever has. I have a general distaste for things that are self-consciously drawing attention to their 'weirdness' and both of those people rely on it almost entirely. It's more complex than that, but I have a real visceral hatred for both.
Ariel Pink's live show has gotten better -- he has a real band now. I felt the same way about the glorified karaoke shows... they felt disingenuously shabby to me, and the whole "authenticity through mediocrity/incompetence" thing really bugs me. But having found out more about it I think it was just a combination of bad luck and lack of resources.
I don't really know Cocorosie, but that voice sure is annoying.
If it's a smooth R&B song that takes an entire other song and overlays insipid wailing diva lyrics, it makes me angry. I'm getting angry just imagining the archetype!
Or maybe Sugababes version of "Freak like Me" (Are Friends Electric?) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SF9RW5mJD1M&feature=related That one really confused me at first, because I loved the backing track but despised the vocal line and strangely extraneous honks and bleeps that (I later found out) Richard X slapped on top of the Numan track.
It's weird, using Tainted Love doesn't bug me anymore, it's like using a folk song or the blues or rhythm changes or something. For me, at a certain point it stops being cliche and just becomes traditional. I'm not sure where the line is, though.
That second example is really bizarre -- the backing track and the overlays don't feel like they fit together at all! But maybe that's just because I know the original song.
working in a nightclub two nights a week, I would say that the same dozen Jamaican pop songs, pounding as loud as possible, over ten hours--yeah, that makes me angry.

There are many others, but it's time for work!

So, how do you feel about Elvis Presley?
