Can't Stop the Bum Rush

At the Apoptosis in Progress seminar, the lunch provided was from Potbelly. Mmm. I decided to cut out early, since I had things to do. I noticed there were some leftover sandwiches, but none of them were turkey, so they didn't do me any good ( Read more... )

Used to have a co-worker who loved to bake. She had sourdough starter, which must be halved weekly, as it continues to grow and will take over the world if you don't hack it back. So she baked several loaves of honey-wheat sourdough every week, and gave them away. She always managed to have one in the car, and when she saw a homeless vet on one of the traffic islands at a stoplight, she'd offer him the bread. So yeah, food is good.

I like to give food to the homeless too and we've got plenty. One time one of them threw a bagel back at me though (like, literally threw it at me) and yelled "I SAID CHANGE!"

Yeah, right, I know there are some like that. I actually first got the idea when I only ate half my giant chocolate chip cookie and realize the other half would just go to waste, so I wondered if one of the bums would like it, or would they be all, "I don't want your half-eaten cookie, dude." I don't know how they are about getting literal leftovers, but really, you know what they say about beggars and choosers.

That is incredible. Such a small act that resonates so much. You have renewed my faith in humanity. Off I go to do something good.

Aww, that's so nice. There is sometimes this bum around ASU who has a sign that says, "Why lie? It's for beer!" I love that guy. At Christmas, I thought about making cookies and giving them to random bums on street corners, but I'm always hard-pressed to find actual homeless people and not just people pretending to be homeless to get money. I always have pessimistic attitudes toward bums. I should stop that and just give one some food. Actually, in Arizona, I should pass around water bottles to them because it's so freakin' hot here. Uh, yeah.

I drove past a guy carrying a sign like that once, and I seriously considered turning around to give him beer money. It's just...cool, somehow.
