When I-like the rest of the Internet-got hooked on True Detective, I-like the rest of the Internet-did note the very male focus and lack of strong female characters. Oh, for a show like True Detective with a female lead! The Internet informed me that the show I sought already existed in the Emmy-nominated miniseries Top of the Lake, which I had ( Read more... )

Yep, exactly, though I think I might have enjoyed the show a little more than you did. Everything you wrote is spot-on, especially the points about nudity and real-world bodies. It was refreshing to see people who are supposed to be Just People actually look like real people to have any judgement of their bodies come from the characters and the work, rather the camera and invasion of Hollywood values on a non-Hollywood world.

It was so different to see such a wide variety of female bodies, and even if I didn't think they were hot, the camera, like you said, never ever treated them as lesser because of their appearance.

I have been meaning to watch both Top of the Lake and True Detective and I keep forgetting!

I have such mixed feelings about Elisabeth Moss.

Having seen her in three very different roles now, I'm impressed with her.

I had an awkward in-person experience with her (although it was during her Armisen-period) so I have to sort of push that out of my mind, since she is undoubtedly a good actress.

Hmm, I might check this out. I did enjoy 'Bright Star,' which was a Campion film, but I feel like her sort of aimless style would probably work better in a low-key period piece like that than in a murder mystery.

Well, it's not a murder mystery. And her aimless style didn't really work for me. But there's some interesting stuff here.

Right, whoops. I did read what you wrote, I swear! I guess I just meant regular mystery.
