I love Jim and Irene and stories that explore their dynamic, and this one is killer - watching both of them evolve is so disturbing particularly because you know what's coming and you know (and so does Irene, it seems) what Jim really is from the beginning. You write both of them so well, and really underline the differences between two people who play (almost) the same game but in extremely different ways. I like this cold, antagonistic version of their relationship, particularly paired with the sweet little fairy tale at the end - it's poignant and dramatic on the grand scale, just like them.

I have too many favorite bits to list, but the next-to-last scene is fabulous - especially Irene spoiling his exit. She's seriously fantastic. I hope you do write more of this; I'd love to read it!

Wow, thanks for writing my prompt! And such a long story at that! :-D Sadly, I don't have time to read it right now (though I really want to!), but I'll look forward to read in during the next days. Just wanted to already thank you for writing my prompt. :-)

Oh, I just noticed I never properly commented on this story after all. I'm so sorry!

I really loved your different versions of how Irene and Jim might have met. Especially the juggling of all the false identities and pretences and not really giving us a definite answer was so well done! And I must admit that despite enjoying all their games and lies very much, I had a soft spot for the little fairytale at the end. :-)
