Newbie w/ a Question

Hey everyone! I've been wanting to give this series a chance for quite some time and now that I see it was recently completed, I'm going to do so. My only question is should I start w/the anime or manga? Does the anime ending coincide w/the manga ending?

I saw the anime first and that was what got me to fall in love with the series and then I read the manga. After like halfway through the anime the storyline goes off on its own so the ending has nothing to with anything that happened with the ending of the manga.
My suggestion would be to read the manga first since you can really understand who each character is that way because when I first saw the anime I kept getting confused about who some people where.
