Series/Fandom: Mahou Tsukai Tai! - Magic User’s Club!
Character's Name: Sae Sawanoguchi
Character's Sex: Female
Character's Age: 16
Canon point: From the OVA right before the Bell has been defeated
Abilities: Sae is a young magic user in training so she has a wide variety of spells she can cast… when they work correctly of course.
Spells List:
- Isaki apam mehinam eto caffe nam! : Flight spell. Sae chants this spell while sitting on her broom in order to make it fly. Usually used on brooms it can also in emergencies be used to make people fly like brooms.
- Eh ex albeh bei toh em! : Exchange. This spell is used to turn one object into another, like a glass into a doll. The catch is the magic user has to concentrate on what they want the object to turn into.
- Ex ateh beito em! : Exchange. Changes an object into a broom or water into rain.
- Eyah shooboo nigoo lattofu! : Decrease Size. This spell is used to shrink an object. For instance an apple could be reduced in size to that of a grape. Eating the shrunken apple will make the person who ate it shrink too!
- Yoto alu peh beitoem! : Fill with Air. This spell will make an object fill with air and float.
- Mai tay ex mehetay! : Object Appear. This spell will make an object appear out of thin air. Again, this has to be an object the magic user is thinking about.
- Dohkeh hesta igu nam! : Truth wand. When cast on another wand this spell will cause the spelled wand to quack when the person holding it tells a lie. Could be cast on other objects as well.
- Ebidee oopoohoola ebidee! : Dance. When cast this spell makes inanimate objects suddenly get up and start dancing/moving around. Sae uses this to move paint brushes.
- Shigunera prestea akusu bei toh em! : Change. A spell that is supposed to make really large objects transform into something else, but when cast poorly can cause them to get up and move around instead.
- Heikas heikas estei biberoi! : Ceremony. This is a spell used only to create a ceremonial space.
- Esoleh imu donika yam! : Multiply. When cast on an object it will multiply. The number of times it will duplicate itself is determined by the magician.
- Odori deiah handa eee! : Teleport. According to the Grimier (book full of magic spells) this spell will create a magical door that will transport a person from one place to the place they envision themselves going.
- Odoberi ribongu veeda! : Couter-Teleport. This will reserve the effects of the teleport spell.
- Vaidam vai iris dam : Fortune. Used to tell fortunes with magic cards.
- Zeh aham iaide zoi imu aka ha : Animates objects. Was used to advertise the Magic Club with walking dolls.
- Mietex Mehite : Flower crown. This spell creates a crown of flowers that lands on a person’s head.
- Evidai Ukukura Ephidai : Powers up a Spell. This spell is used to multiply the effect of a spell and make it more powerful.
- Notam Friden Biden Worl : Telepathy. This spell, when cast, allows the magic user to read another person's thoughts.
The Grimoire is a thick magic book full of spells so there are likely a lot more spells that Sae just hasn‘t learned or attempted to use yet.
Also, to make all of these spells more powerful she has a magic symbol. Every magician has a magic symbol that when they draw it on the ground and cast their spell will make that spell much stronger than it normally would be. For Sae her magic symbol is a curly Q swirl.
She has a teddy bear that she calls Jeffy that occasionally a more powerful magician will communicate to her through. So, Jeffy occasionally comes to life to magically draw Sae a helpful image or to dance when she is feeling sad. Most of the time he is just a normal looking teddy bear.
Strengths:
Sae cares a lot about her friends so when they are in danger and need her help that inspires her magic to become stronger than it usually would be. On one occasion she was able to keep her friends from dying when they were falling out of the air by some how finding the words to cast a spell that caused a pair of wings to form on her friend’s back so they could land safely.
She love really loves doing magic and she is very dedicated to becoming a much better magician than she is. She practices a lot on her flying abilities and tries really, really hard. That love and persistence of hers often pays off with a strong spell.
Sae has the potential to be a very powerful magician with truly awesome powers… but she just hasn’t quite reached that point yet.
Weaknesses:
Sae often doubts her own abilities. When a magician doubts themselves that makes their magic a lot weaker. At times her self doubt was so bad that she actually lost her magic and fell out of the sky because her broom couldn’t fly anymore.
Sae is SO CLUMSY! She is always tripping over things, crashing into walls and loosing control of her broom.
Magical spells often backfire when Sae is the one casting them because she does forget the words and she has trouble concentrating on what she is supposed to be doing. She constantly has to be reminded to focus. Once while turning a large object into rain, Sae’s lack of focus accidentally made it change into a giant teddy bear instead.

Personality:
Sae is a very childish young High School student so much so that her room is full of toys, she talks to her good luck charm, a tiny teddy bear with a blue bow called ‘Jeffy’, as if he is real, and she keeps a journal full of childish drawings about her day. Usually children give up making picture journals once they reach High School. She is very naive about the world and often due to this she doesn’t understand what people are trying to say to her. When some one is saying or reacting to something perverted around her she rarely ever gets it.
She tries to be supportive of her friends and always encourages them to accomplish any goal they set out for themselves. But, she doesn’t always understand other people’s feelings and can occasionally say something totally innocently that hurts one of her friend’s feelings. When Nanaka decided to confess her love to a guy Sae encouraged her to do so, tripped over her own words, and became so excited about the idea that over the course of the school day she became more excited and flustered about the upcoming confession than Nanaka herself was.
Sae is incredibly clumsy. Walking down a perfectly flat sidewalk she will trip, walking over to say hello to someone she will run into them, some how even the sides of buildings aren’t large enough for her to dodge her way around them. Of course when she causes havoc she is always quick to apologize, over, and over, and over again. She doesn’t want to hurt anyone and being so clumsy is something she wishes she could overcome.
Related to this clumsy streak Sae often doubts her own abilities. How could a clumsy stupid girl like her ever become a good magician? She occasionally needs reminding that if she believes in herself her magic will work perfectly again.
Usually a quick pep talk either given to her by one of her friends or by herself while talking to Jeffy is enough to get her on the right path again. In general she is optimistic when it comes to the affairs and problems of others and a bit pessimistic about her own problems, until again, a pep talk happens.
Sae has a bit of a crush on her magic club leader Takakura, but she isn’t entirely aware of it. She knows she likes him and respects his ability to use magic but she hasn’t fully realized this has developed into a crush. She wants to learn magic to save Takakura from the alien Bell she thinks he is going to try and fight by himself, actually he was lying to her about that and Sae was too dense to understand his attempts to confess that.
When she was a child she accidentally ruined her sister’s birthday cake and attempts to fix it only made the cake look worse. She ran off to have a good cry about it and was fully prepared not to return home, until Jeffy showed up and danced for her. Jeffy really is a very powerful magician but also it is the name Sae gave the teddy bear the magician gave to her to cheer her up. Sae talks to this bear as if it is alive and sometimes Jeffy responds by giving her some helpful magical insight or just being there to comfort her. Sae is actually a very powerful magician with a get potential for magic. Jeffy knew that and subtly tries to help guide her in the right direction.
Sae cries just about at the drop of a hat. She cries when she thinks Takakura is in danger, she cries when another friend teasingly says she will be a bad witch, and she cries some times when she falls. On top of that she has moments of dark brooding alone time, which again she usually pulls herself out of by talking things over with Jeffy or drawing in her journal.
For the most part though, Sae is a bubbly energetic young girl. She is usually happy and cheerfully trying to learn magic with her friends. She has so much energy that it can make it difficult for her to sit still for long periods of time. This makes flying on her broom difficult since she has to sit, concentrate on flying, and riding the broom makes her butt hurt!
She often becomes embarrassed and flustered if she has an attack of clumsy or starts tripping over her own words. When this happens instead of stopping and trying to get her thoughts back together again she just talks more… and rambles on and on… until she finally gives up usually with a, “I forgot what I was saying!”
Sae does not enjoy to be in dangerous or scary situations. She often panics while in battle and makes things more difficult for her friends by getting flustered which makes her magic fail. In the end however, she is often the one to find the strength within herself to save everyone.
Strengths:
I mentioned already how powerful her magic can be when she believes in herself and her power, so that is still a strength that should be mentioned here. When she can get her magic working properly, that is a strength. Though my Sae was pulled from a canon point just before she does so, it is the power of her magic and her desire to save her friends that gives Sae the strength to defeat the Bell all by herself. She is capable of welding a lot of power.
Sae is a good cook. She often does the cooking for her and the sister she lives with since her sister, Saki, is really terrible at it. Saki can't even tell the difference between hot sauce and tomato juice.
She is also a good friend. Not sure how much a of strength this is except she often draws strength from the power of her friendships with others. Her optimism and upbeat nature often gives her friends the strength to do things they wouldn’t have thought themselves capable of. She is a source of strength for many people… even if she is pretty silly at times.
Weaknesses:
She is the master of all clumsy people, unable to walk in a straight line with out running into something. This effects her magic as well.
She is really energetic and that makes it difficult to sit still for long periods of time. This can make broom riding difficult she wants to get up and move around… and sitting on the broom makes her butt hurt.
Takakura. Since she has a crush on him she will often go along with what ever he says without really even questioning it. Attack the alien Bell when we can’t even use our magic properly yet? Right! I’ll do my best!
And dense. She often has no idea what people are really up to because she is so child-like, innocent, and naive.
She also dislikes yams and … frogs! EW!

[Crash!]
I’m sorry!!
[CRASH!]
Ow… my bottom…
[Video]
[Yes, a small red headed girl was causing all that noise. She finally manages to switch the video feature on… or maybe that was accidentally done as well? It seems to be upside down.]
I’m really sorry! I was just trying to save my friends from the Bell when this strange darkness came down, which is weird because it was already night at the time, but any way the Bell had my friends and I was flying up to save them, and…
[Sniff.]
And, now the Bell is gone and I don’t know where any of my friends are… They have to be safe! I just know they have to be safe, but I … I don’t know what I’m saying…
[Oh… the video isn’t upside down after all. The girl is hanging upside down by her cape from one of the buildings in Traverse Town. ]
Can some one tell me where my friends are?
RP Sample:
Sae stared at the paopu fruit, the strange star-shaped treat that seemed to grow so prevalently on this island chain. The problem was these islands suffered from a distinct lack of ice cream.
Sae raised her duck-headed magic wand and began chanting the magic spell that would transform this simple fruit into a yummy sugary treat. How nice it would be to have a bowl of ice cream on a hot day like today! So much better than a piece of fruit! Even if it was a pretty fruit… all yellow and star-shaped… I wonder how fruit can grow into shapes like that? And how big to they get? Fruit like this is pretty big already but can they get even bigger?
Uh huh. She shook her head a few times attempting to clear her mind of these kinds of thoughts.
“I need to focus! Takaura said that in order to do this spell correctly you just have to focus on what you want the object to turn into,” She glanced to the left where a tiny brown teddy bear with a blue bow is sitting, “Right, Jeffy?”
The bear didn’t move or say a single thing, but Sae nodded as if he did. She closed her eyes and chanted the spell, “Ex ateh beito em!”
At first it seemed like nothing happened. There was a magical twinkle around the fruit and then… nothing. Sae kept her eyes closed, waiting. Nothing. Cautiously she opened one eye. The paopu fruit was just sitting there. Unmoving, unchanged… Sae was about to complain about the spell not working when suddenly the fruit wiggled and before she could react at all, grew twenty times its normal size.
“Whhhhaaaaaaa!!!”
So instead of a nice ice cream treat, Sae found herself sitting on top of a giant paopu fruit.
