Why is it, that almost invariably when I tell someone that what they are doing is wrong or illegal, their response is to tell me either "Some other place says I can do this" or "This is the way we've done it hundreds of time

I get a similar effect in my line of work. They ask us "should we do this"? We tell them, no, it would be extremely risky. Them:"well, we want to do it anyway". Then, later, when things blow up... "Why didn't you warn us! This is your fault! Fix it for free! Also, i have this other new project in the works..."
