"Okay, now just-- Yeah, hands down. Use the pillow. That's what it's there for. Just take it slow but not too slow because if you don't break the pull of gravity you can't get up and if you can get up then you're just laying on the ground and there's no point. I'll grab your legs and we'll just-- ThereOnce Roger was in position, Bridge checked ( Read more... )

"Jesus, Bridge, this can't be a good idea," Roger protested, his hands meeting the sandy ground in panicked purchase. The fact that Bridge could just flip up into this position was somewhat horrifying to Roger, and while he got plenty of exercise on the island, he couldn't imagine he'd ever in his life worked out the muscles that needed to be strong to keep him in that position.

Once he was certain he wasn't going to fall on his face (close enough to certain, anyway), Roger did as he was told, taking a deep breath and letting the whip of the wind and bustle of the island population wash over him in calm, rhythmic waves.

"Yeah, no, this isn't working. Now I have a headache and I have to pee."

"Give it a minute. That might be the ideas getting hung up in your bladder," Bridge advised, shifting minutely to settle himself a little better. "Just give yourself enough time to resettle. You need to find a new center."

It was easy for Bridge to manage, sometimes in less than the blink of any eye, but that was because he'd had years of practice. He knew very well that Roger hadn't and probably needed more time to work through things, so Bridge would be patient.

Roger did as he was told, shifting his weight back and forth on his hands until he had a more square center of gravity, but even that felt strange. He could feel the blood rushing to his face, the way his perpetually-cold hands seemed to chill even more, the itch in his nose that he was too chickenshit to scratch.

"How is this gonna help me write?" Roger asked for the third time, turning his head in a cascade of temperamental curls to face his green-glad companion.

"The ideas all flow downwards, to your head, so you can access them easier when you want to write," he explained with patience. This was child's play to him, and he could breathe easily without getting red in the face. Which made him grin when he glanced to his side and got to see Roger struggle a little. "If you just, you know, relax."
