Winter Solstice

Dec 21, 2011 09:46

I have a fondness for Winter Solstice. Christmas was usually spent either at home alone growing up, or in some motel or another while my father did his travelling-salesman thing. But Winter Solstice was what my mother celebrated, and I was intensely grateful that there was no buying or selling involved ( Read more... )

You have a much more wintry oasis up there, and I'm sure you have a few gifts... make one of them a scrabble set, and just do it again!
(Which is not to say I don't miss having you local for these occasions...)
The old days are no more gone than a fire is. Got a match?

Here, here. You have a tendency at poignant moments of the year to long for the traditions of the past, instead of recreating them with your current batch of loved ones.

I guess I don't believe in recreation. What was, was. I can't go backwards, and trying to get back to where I was takes energy away from the present.

I have traditions and friendships and even a few family up here now. But it's not the same...ever forward, I suppose. :)

YMMV.

It's not recreation. It's "I enjoyed doing these thing with those people then. Why don't I try doing it with THESE people NOW? Maybe it will still be awesome?" Because traditions are nice, but traditions are flexible. You're not re-creating something so much as honoring it and helping things to still feel "seasonal." (Every season has it's traditions)

Or, more eloquently:

"Nostalgia is nice, but in life, it is best to live every moment but hold onto none."

I feel more and more that Norway is awesome. I should have learned Norwegian so I could go stay there. Guess I'll just have to settle for a visit some day.

Also, I have a friend that pointed out to me that I like it when it is dark out... At least I did in college. Guess I should learn to love it as much as when it is light out again.
