Attending Algernon Rowan-Webb’s class had been the highlight of the young wizard’s day. Not everyone shared his viewpoint though; Merlin had heard one of his fellow students sigh with boredom when the first sentence came out the new wizarding instructor’s mouth. The students knew what they were going to hear - the story of how Mildred Hubble saved him. It had been just by chance that she was at the right place at the right time. She was no heroine to most of the students. Baz even went as far as to say that Ethel should be given credit for using magic to shape change Mildred into a frog.
But Merlin, he didn’t mind it at all; Merlin loved to hear about Mildred. He was enthralled by her; even hearing someone talk of her reminded him of Mildred’s charm. The young wizard could not get Mildred out of his head or his heart, ever since she showed him how to stand up for himself. That had been a life-changing event for him.
“Merlin, may I have a word with you?” Algernon asked Merlin after he dismissed class.
“Yes,” the young wizard replied.
“Grand Wizard Helibore and I agreed that it is best if I take on one student as an apprentice,” Algernon stated. “I think you would be a perfect candidate for this. You seem to appreciate my lectures the most.”
“Well I really love Mildred!” Merlin said modestly, before realizing he was talking to a professor. “Uhh I mean your lectures on about how she rescued you. How practical magic is. It’s just as important as learning about the dragons.”
“I tried explaining that to Helibore,” the old wizard grinned. “He is so stubborn. He values of my lectures on wizard and witch heroics.”
“I appreciate that as well.”
“I know you do by the way you listen intently during class,” Algernon smiled. “So, shall I tell Helibore the good news that you are my new apprentice?”
“Yes,” Merlin said delighted.
It felt surreal. It was a great honor to be the sole apprentice of a wizard for one and one teaching. His father was going to be proud of his accomplishment.
Merlin was sure that this was the beginning of the endless happiness he was destined for; he was destined to be happy for the rest of his life. He felt his infatuation with Mildred grow, as he held her responsible for his good fortune. If it hadn’t been for her, he wouldn’t have this opportunity. He couldn’t wait to see her again and show his appreciation.
