Personality:
The Chief is a soldier, and has been trained as such since the age of six. As a result he is serious, practical, and down-to-earth. He tends to be cautious and prefers planning ahead when possible, but is used to improvising and has repeatedly proven to be difficult to kill. He is usually wary of others on first meeting and can be a bit paranoid, but he'll relax somewhat as he gets used to you.
Besides combat prowess in everything from bare hands to rocket launchers, John is also quite intelligent and extremely adaptable. He can use a computer effectively (though he's far from the best there is) and has some mechanical skills as well. Though he has proven to be effective alone, the Chief prefers to work with others in a group and is more accustomed to it.
The worst hours for the Chief are those spent idle. He hates sitting around, and if he doesn't have something to do he will go to lengths to FIND something.
If you were to honestly get to know the Chief, you would find that despite his distance he really is a good guy. He's loyal to the few he trusts, honest, dependable, and the first to offer to help or volunteer for something dangerous if needed. However, he's a little awkward socially and lacks a lot of normal human life experience. He's bad at conversation and most of his remarks are short, terse, and to the point. He makes jokes sometimes, usually grim ones, but it's often hard to tell when he's kidding.
He takes a great deal of responsibility onto himself and worries a lot, but the Chief will never voluntarily show it. He is unemotional and tries to keep it that way, for the good of everyone else's peace of mind. Because if the Spartan starts to break down, what's everyone else supposed to do?
