Did Heidi ever even meet your mom? Does she have any basis for an opinion of whether your mother would be proud of you doing hospice work? (I can't imagine that she wouldn't be proud of that, though.)
What about replying that you hope that your mother is always proud of the person you've become? Then you don't have to thank her for the comment and you don't have to ignore it either.
I'm fairly certain Heidi never met my Mom. If Mom were living today and I called her to tell her about the hospice work, not only would Mom not encourage me, she would tell me all the reasons why I should not pursue it. Mom filled my head with can'ts since i can remember.

Anyway I slice it, if I don't respond in a way that will appease Heidi, she will get angry with me. I like your suggestion, but me saying it, it will come across harsh. And since Heidi's fishing for a response from me, I'm not going to give her one. it will only lead to another argument.
