As a published writer and screenwriter, who has edited and ghostwritten numerous movies and books, I analyze and critique films from all decades. I notice that a co-star can make or break a movie and the stars career. For example, I recently saw a 1950s film with Clark Gable, called Solider of Fortune, in which he had wanted Grace Kelly as a co-star, but she got married to her prince and no longer acted at this time, and along come Susan Hayward for the co-star in Soldier of Fortune. But Susan Hayward looked rather old and tired, frumpy. She just didn’t have a fresh youthful appearance about herself. Her tired look marred the entire film. Susan Hayward, like Jane Russell, has a hard look; but maybe were cutie when they were young. This was unfortunate for Clark Gable, because he was older but still handsome as ever, but his career was weaning about this time, and in this film had he worked with Grace Kelly who was quite modern, elegant and fresh looking it could have revitalized his career. But after doing the film with Susan ( ... )
