Meta: Alternate Universes and why we love them so

Oct 10, 2010 14:23

I've only written fanfic in about four fandoms (so far), and I've noticed that in my fic and nonfic pairings I have a definite bent towards "the smart girl and the guy who has some issues." Elizabeth and John are of course the epitome of this, though Elizabeth has her issues and John is pretty smart too ( Read more... )

I love the fluffy AUs!! I don't seem to be too inclined toward AUs in general, possibly because there's a whole bunch of extra canon to learn? I'm not sure. (I don't tend to go for historical reads or supernatural stuff in my trashy romance novels, either, so it may just be a lack of imagination on my part.)

I loved firemanverse that came from Teal'c hallucinations in "Changeling", though that was largely SG-1 with SGA tossed in there at the end. (And why the heck didn't we ever get a proper naniteverse for Elizabeth's hallucinations in The Real World? Probably because John wasn't in it, and we shippers have our priorities dammit!)

And Langford U! :) I remember that. It was awesome. As was the Boston University one-off from one Miss miera_c!

Also havocthecat's trek-verse is SO AWESOME. I fail at links, but, omg. SO AWESOME for the crossover Trekkies in the group.

I've been waiting for a Star Trek-style "mirror universe," where the basic premise is that everyone is just evil. ;) I suppose I'll have to write it myself, hehe.

For a mirror mirror universe read lannakitty's The Long Road Home(http://archiveofourown.org/works/97115) which deals with John and team bouncing around several alt. realities plus has plenty of Elizabeth/John shippiness! (Of course, I'd also love to read your version so don't let my rec stop you...)

And I now realises that I love the same kind of pairing that I do. What can I say? I love smart girls! :P

hopefully to read
DUH! Stargate!Ren fic is what I'm always hoping for when I check my f'list!! :P This AU is awesome!

the "how the hell did they think of that?" awesome pairing of Cameron Mitchell and Ainsley Hayes.
May I add that this applies to Lorne and Kate in both stargate_ren and wildwest_lantis? :D You made me fall hard for them!

There was also denver_legal where Elizabeth is a judge and John a lawyer. And doctor_sga where they all worked in the same hospital.

I feel like John&Elizabeth can be set in any AUs and they would work. And Atlantis/SG1 are definitely the only shows with that much AUs existing.

I was to state upfront that I'm both a little embarrassed by the praise and grateful that people have enjoyed the crazy alternate universes I've written. It's given me a lot of confidence in my world-building skills. And just wait till you see the wacky AU I've got in store for next week!

I suspect whatever era he lived in, he'd have a speed fetish.

No! I did not need to start re-casting Grand Prix with these guys! No no no!

Argh. I hate that movie. And yet.

the "how the hell did they think of that?" awesome pairing of Cameron Mitchell and Ainsley Hayes.

Oh, that was easy. I believe my exact words were "look at the pretty!"

I should also mention that with west_gate and the WWII AU, among other things, I had a tremendous amount of help from freifraufischer. My writing is almost never an insular process, and she has been a huge help to me on several projects, large and small.

I know i'm kinda new to this fandom, but how on earth did i miss so many AUs?! I mean really. Welp, there goes my book reading list.

But my all time favourite AU (and i'll go as far as saying favourite Sparky story) is Of Sunday Fathers and Melted Ice-Creams by anuna_81.

Heh. You know, I still don't understand the fascination with International Relations. Which sounds like I'm fishing for compliments, I know, but it was pure escapism for me in the middle of some family stress and I never thought the writing was as good as it could have been.
