Have you ever looked at 18th century quilted petticoats? Some of the patterns are really gorgeous.

Also, you might have to find it at the library (That is where I found it) But the Costume society has an amazing 24 page article about quilted petticoats. Most of the pages are just line drawings of all of the designs (plants, animals, mermaids, pirate ships etc.)
