Corsets, embroideries and good company :-)

The FR corset study day at The Museum of London on Thursday was amazing! So many lovely people, some gorgeous and interesting antique corsets, and some very nice tea and cakes.

There wasn't time to talk to everybody which was a real shame. There were a large number of non-LJers and I totally failed to catch everyone's names. But crikeyaphrodite, harmanhay, lauralaralira, pitufina and d_gold were all wonderful, and I'm really pleased we've finally met in person. I'm already looking forward to the next FR trip.

*cough* Symingtom's?! *cough*

For my part, my eyes are now longing for more beauty... crikeyaphrodite and I went to the V&A yesterday and marveled at the teeny-tiny stitches on show in the embroideries and such. There was one hand-quilted pillowcase that was done entirely in back-stitch rather than running stitch. The stitches were literally about 1mm or smaller in length. Amazing. As crikeyaphrodite pointed out, you'd probably go blind ;-)

But blindness-inducing or no, I think we've all been really inspired by what we saw. The corsets really make you think about construction, whilst the V&A pretties set out their own challenge... you just look at those things and think, "right, I'd better raise my game!".

In other news, I today gave away a few things on freegle. A sewing machine, my first ever mannequin (sob!), some fabric scraps and some old patterns. I'm not a hoarder in general, but I always want to keep craft stuff "just incase". Our house is getting a bit over-full and I need to clear out some stuff, so I hope these pieces will be enjoyed at their new home.
