". . ."

He's not sure he heard Alfred correctly.

"What?"

"Cubefall, that rather strange holiday, she chose to be a man for a few days. We met while she was bartending."

Somehow, the idea that Kate could become a man boggles him.

Even if it's Milliways and it's Cubefall (whatever that might be). He wasn't around during the holiday, and he's not sure he really much misses it.

"Oh.

"Erm."

"We've spoken since then and share a couple of interests,"

Running from the law and playing cards in particular.

That's the bit about Kate that Albus doesn't know.

As far as he's concerned, she's an avid reader and someone who used to be a teacher.

"Oh - d'you like reading poetry too?"

"Not a great amount, but I do enjoy it every once in a while."

"Then what sorts of interests?"

Teaching?

Alfred doesn't seem like he'd be into that sort of thing, though he did give Albus a pretty good lesson on confidence the last time they spoke.

"Playing cards for one, not everyone understands the intricacies. She's also an intelligent woman, who's a pleasure to speak to,"

Albus doesn't need to know about the illegal interests they share.

Albus raaaises an eyebrow, cottoning on that Alfred's being a little vague for a reason.

But as Albus isn't the sort to push and nosy his way through people's personal lives, he leaves it well alone.

"Oh. I've never played cards before," he admits. "Not Muggle ones anyway. The only thing I've ever used cards for was for building houses."

"That can be a good way to use them. Its one of my hobbies since cards can provide many ways to keep yourself occupied and to connect to people. What are wizard cards like?"

"Not anything too special," he says, shrugging. "They seem to be a bit more difficult in stacking together, as the Kings and Queens often get into fights."

They flicker at each other.

"The Joker's a right riot."

"How strange. Do you think I could see a deck some time? I've never seen one where the cards interacted that way before."

He nods.

"Yeah, next time I come into the bar, I'll - um. Leave you a deck."

They're amusing. But they can sometimes blabber during Poker games. There's a trick in getting them to remain quiet. It usually involves bribery of some sort.

"Thank you, I'll be curious to look over them. Perhaps you could even teach me some wizard card games."

"Yeah! That'd be fun," says Albus. "I haven't played with cards in ages."

He smiles.

"I'd have to refresh myself in the rules first."
