When my boys were little, we read a little Shel every night, and I would get quite chokey at the ends of some things, like this thing. There were other books also -- god. Ms. Berlin Walks by Janet Yolen was nearly impossible to get through. And Patricia Polacco, especially The Trees of the Dancing Goats,, I Can Hear the Sun, and Chicken Sunday.
Yeah, and then there's the fact that Shel had a really dark imagination, but was also a big smush. That he wrote The Giving Tree and then also that weird poem about how if you pick your nose there's a worm that will bite your finger off... And don't get me started on Uncle Shelby's ABZ Book...
I can't even *think* about The Velveteen Rabbit without tearing up some days.
