He's not the best Uncle in the world, is he? I like that this is consistent with what we see with his family in canon.

Always love seeing more of Ianto with his family. I feel bad for him, the one time he tries to be there for them and it still falls through

Normally it's easy to get your priorities straight - family should come first - but in Ianto's case (or for anyone working for Torchwood Three) work does have to come first, because situations that seem minor can blow up to epic proportions if you don't keep on top of things.

On the other hand, work is a handy excuse for getting out of a situation where you feel out of your depth. Poor Ianto, copes better with fighting aliens than with dealing with his own family.
