Berries!

The beginning of September's coming up which means I should be seeing the end of Beloved's first harvest from the garden. I could ask him if there's a lot more summer fruit to pick, but I live in fear of him saying "yes."

Don't get me wrong, i mean he has managed to stick to this obsession for years now - that's almost unprecedented with him! ( Read more... )

*sigh* If I knew you in real life I'd be biting your hand off for spare fruit - I do pressure canning and home brew and dehydrated food.....Mmmmmm....fruit leather.

Even worse as I think we're in much the same part of the world - I'm in Huddersfield.

Tip with the fruit for icecream - puree or roughly squish the fruit and freeze it to make ice cream later as I've noticed that home made ice cream tends to suffer after a couple of months in the freezer.

If all else fails, contact the local WI? they might be interested in your excess bounty.

Does anyone truly love gooseberries this much?

Yes! I could eat myself sick on gooseberries, especially the hard green ones. Marvellous combination of sweet and sour. Hands-down my favorite berry.

these are soooo sour, they demand so many sweet things with them to make them edible

Rasps, Brambles and red and black currants all freeze really well. Shove as many of them as you dare in freezer bags, seal them and bung 'em in the freezer til it's winter and you're craving fruit crumbles etc.

Strawberries ... not sure. I mean I can eat a pound a day, but I can see how some people wouldn't.

I wonder if you can make cherry brandy the same way as you make sloe gin? Raspberry cider is also really good - chuck a handful of frozen rasps into a glass of artisan cider and drink as they melt.

Gooseberries ... I'm stumped. I loathe the furry little things with a passion.

hmmmm I may need a bigger freezer now

Booze could be risky but definitely worth a chance

The gooseberries remain and endless question

Peanut butter and jam disturbs me muchly, yes yes it does

::chuckle:: Why, may I ask? (And I should add that I also love putting preserves on a peanut butter sandwich. Yum.)

Any food banks or soup kitchens in your area that take fresh fruit and vegetables? A lot don't, due to storage and preservation issues but it could be worth checking into. (Or they might take jam?)

Plus, just about anything can be made into wine or some other form of booze.
