 Someone does or says something that is grossly homophobic. Sometimes there’s outrage, sometimes there isn’t - either way there’s a number of people who remember that and the label “homophobe” is now attached to that person. A number of people, especially GBLT people, are not too pleased with them and will avoid them if possible.

I approach this from the other side with my kids all the time, where someone has made a mistake and hurt someone. I try and explain to them that they can try and make it better, but that sometimes that isn't going to be enough to repair the relationship. That sometimes, they have to accept that they have done the best they can to fix the damage they caused, learn from it, and move on... and that that might not be enough for the person they hurt to forgive them, but that they have to accept within themselves if they have worked their hardest to solve the problem.

It's a hard lesson for kids to learn, but hopefully it will give them the resilience to learn from their mistakes and move forwards without being pissy when their learning process isn't always applauded by those around them.
