As can be seen, the comment threads of the previous post have exploded like a splody thing and lots of triggers, unhappiness and general unpleasantness as well as a lot of great attempts to both get it and great attempts to educate. There’s some good info in that thread ( Read more... )

All those threads scare me :O I confess I didn't read 50% of the comments, because, seriously, numbers scare me off, but I will try later. I just can't help feeling happy that my comment was left alone :P

This is why I decided not to wade in on this one. I can't think of another group that get as much shit as trans individuals (from some of the GLB community as well as the straight community) and I was afraid I might unintentionally put foot in mouth. But I've been reading and learning which sometimes is better than posting.

Aye, I think so - there's a lot to learn there.

Not to mention that I just realized I had a foot in mouth moment with a transgender friend a few years ago. (Face palm and a big OY!). Off to apologize - I doubt she'll remember, but this will haunt me if I don't.

Right, I'm going to admit to being ignorant now and ask :o) What does cis mean? I've seen it crop up a couple of times on LJ, in people's journals and in communities, but Google is not being helpful. I have a rough idea from the context, and suspect I fall into its scope, but if someone could spell it out in words of one syllable for me I'd appreciate it.

Because I'm appalling at explaining things, here's what Wikipedia had to say on the matter.

Thank you :o) I think I've seen that before, but couldn't get my head around it at the time. After going back to the earlier post and reading all the comments, I think I've got a better idea now.

Cisgendered. The opposite of someone who is transgendered :)

The wiki article explains it well :)
