On the one to ten scale, how pretty is the name Miriam? I like it, but, as it turns out, my taste for English names is not exactly an English' taste for them. Any suggestions for prettier M-beginning names if that one is thoroughly horrible? The girl is younger that Harry & Draco by a couple of years. Parents are foreign but have lived in England ( Read more... )

I work at a school, we have quite a few Miranda's, a Molly, Millie,Melinda, 2 Marina's and a Madeline. They're all aged between 7 and 11, but these names have been quite popular here in England for a while.

Hope that helps a little.

Am I to read this as 'Miriam is a horrendous name'? :g: Molly is a name that makes me go spare, and for the person I need named will be such a bad joke it's not even real. Miranda is lovely but I have this firmly rooted Sex and the City reference. In all honesty, my first idea was Mirabella, but then I realised it is not a real name most probably and also - talk about shameless fangirling. :)

Thanks!

I like Miriam! I've known two who were very nice people. But I'm American and have also been told I have strange taste in names. You could also go with Meghan, which was a very popular name around the time she would've been born (I'm the same age and once had a class at college with 3 Meghans among 30 people), but again, this is an American standpoint. And I personally think Miriam's a lot prettier than Meghan. :)

Miriam is seen as a rather old fashioned name, it's my great aunt's name. Over the last couple of years I've taught: Maeve, Megan, Mia, Marianne, Maria, Melissa, and Micheala. My personal faves are Mia and Megan.

Well. I'm choosing a name for a witch okay, Draco's wife, and WW are, what, forty-fifty years behind modern world? I don't mind the old-fashioned thing, I just don't want something that will sound like 'Gertrude' to a local :) I want it to be moderately pretty, is all.

I love Mia, too! :g: And Megan, which apparently is spelt with an 'h' in America.
