Are you sure the possum was dead? My mom found a "dead" possum in her yard once, bravely scooped it up with a shovel and dumped it in her garbage barrel - only to find, the next time she opened it to throw out a bag of trash, that there was an extremely alive - and pissed-off - possum in the bottom of the can! Maybe the squirrels' craziness was enough to make the possum play dead if it felt threatened?

Or maybe it was just protesting that the mac and cheese was out of date.

Little guy might not be as dead as he seemed. They do that and you'd swear they were gone, and the next day they are-off to wherever opposums go.
Cute squirrels, damn things are so entertaining.

I love squirrels, except for when they drop hickory nut torpedos onto my head from 50 ft as I walk out the back door. They've kinda quit doing that the last two years, but for a while there I was considering mass murder! LOL
But very true that the possum is likely not dead (unless you have poison planted somewhere in your garden), that something spooked it and it fell down to play dead.
