It's Spring 1964 in Skyline City, and Edie Sedgwick is busy trying to decide how best to wear her hair to get her lab partner to focus less on her than on their work. Not that she doesn't appreciate the attention, because she does, and he knows it...but she's trying to get them to pass chem this semester so they can both graduate.

Edie is upstairs, putting the finishing touches on herself. She's got her hair curled and bouncing around the edge of her hairline, small diamond earrings in her ears, and a diamond necklace on. Her pink dress is as it should be; fluffy and probably more layers of chiffon than are strictly necessary. She's admiring herself in her full-length mirror, hoping that she looks as good as she thinks she does. She debates about the fur shrug, and leaves it, going back to fidgeting with her make-up.
Her father, on the other hand, is pacing in the foyer. The frown on his face makes it explicitly clear that he is not happy about these turns of events. He's had his words with Edie every night that she'd come home after going out with Tony.
Words like, “Punk”, “Thug”, “No Account Guinea” and the like. This, of course, has done nothing to dampen Edie's spirits when it comes to Tony, but rather just frustrates and antagonizes Edie further. Nor has she mentioned any of this to Tony, of course, since watching Tony fight her ( ... )

It suits his coloring, and fits perfectly. He's feeling good, even if between his white tux and red car and the pink dress he knows she is going to be wearing, they are going to look like a Valentine on wheels. Hey, better too much passion than too little, right?
He's trying not to think too much about the possibility of having to deal with her parents, and is mostly hoping that Edie won't be like the stereotypical woman who takes forever to get ready. The less time he has for conversation, the better.
He parks the car out in front of her house, picks up the box from the passenger seat that holds her corsage, and heads up to the front door. After a deep breath to calm himself, he rings the doorbell.

"Can I help you?" he says, not sounding the slightest bit helpful.
Edie's upstairs, continuing to try to make sure she looks presentable. It won't be long, she swears!

Oh, this won't go well.

Luckily for you, Tony, you don't have to answer. You just have to get distracted by Edie on the stairs, as she steps down them in her dress, finally ready to go.
"Hi Tony," she says, trying to not look as much like she's drinking the sight of him in.
She gives her father a peck on the cheek and edges toward the door.

She does look perfect.
"Edie," he says eventually. "Wow. I mean, look at you. You look great. Uh, here."
Ah, the time-honored ritual of guys attempting to pin corsages on their dates without stabbing anybody with the pins. He opens the box to reveal a pink corsage, and holds it out to h er.

"Thanks," she says grinning. "You look good."
She looks over the corsage and beams. "Tony, thank you...it's beautiful!"
She'll even try her hardest not to blush and titter as his hands get very close.
Her father, however looks on, unhappily.

Yeah, it's not really working out quite that way now. He manages to pin the corsage onto one of the straps of her dress, chastely and safely, mumbling an apology even so.
"I didn't get you one that matched my rose because I didn't know how red on pink would look, I hope that's okay."

"Tony, don't worry about that," she says, and squeezes his hand.
"I want her back, at midnight, and no lingering on the veranda. Edith, you know what I told you, so if it comes to be a problem, you know what to do."
Edie winces the tiniest of bits, "Alright, bye Dad."

He turns to Edie, and grabs her arm, pulling her away from him. "Get upstairs. You're not going anywhere with this punk again."
Edie pulls sharply away from her father and grabs Tony's hand and pulls him toward the door as best she can.
"I'm going with Tony to prom, and that's the end of it. Stop it!"
She looks over at Tony pleadingly. "Please, let's just go...please..."

And he's good, but not perfect.
"My uncle wouldn't lay a hand on his daughter like that," he says quietly, giving the mayor a glare, before turning his attention back to Edie.
"Yeah, let's get out of here. Don't want to miss dinner."

"Tony, please...it's not worth it," she says even more quietly. She shudders slightly and opens the door.
Her father watches them both stonily but doesn't reply.
Edie walks through the door into the warm, spring evening. "I'm sorry, Tony...don't let him get to you."

He lights a cigarette to steady his nerves.
"It's hard not to let him get to me. I tried, but... he's an infuriating man."

She, after he gets a drag, takes one herself, and after they've both exhaled, kisses him lightly.
"I know, hon, I know how awful he is...but, we're going to have fun tonight...and we're going to look damn good while we're doing it. Let's go get some dinner."

He wants to kiss her, much more firmly, but he's not going to do it within sight of the house. He just wants to get to the car and get out of there.
"I made reservations for us at a nice little place downtown. Hope you don't mind."
He opens the car door for her when they reach the sidewalk.
