That last bit makes me wonder, though, what does "growing the fuck up" look like? Do we necessarily have to abandon our online lives to grow up? If so, why?

Don't get me wrong, I do the Facebook as self-flagellation thing too. I mean, 90% of my old high school classmates are online, and I find myself looking at their lives in relation to my own, too. Roughly 80% of them have kids and are buying houses (the most minute details of which they looooove to tell everyone about in status updates). The other 15% are successful in fields I admire (hello, Oxford librarian friend and ancient language scholar living in Italy!). As a married but childless 31 yo undergraduate, I seem to fail on all counts.

But at the same time, I'm proud of the life I've made and it's reflection online. I'm writing a novel, learning about literature, helping people write better, and generally living life on my own terms. So what?

Is THAT what "growing the fuck up" looks like? I certainly fucking hope so!

This looks like the same sort of analysis that gave us the "Generation X" term in the 90s.
