Kind of a standard fill. 1/? anonymous June 26 2009, 04:07:23 UTC
All right, I know there have been at least two fills for the original 'swords 'n' sorcery AU pls' prompt, but I have this idea, and it won't go away, and you are going to sit through it. No intention of stepping on DnD-anon's toes, but this is going to be completely different anyway, so don't worry.Daniel isn't really sure how long he's been riding, and he has never been more glad that he stuck to his 'devil-mount' against all opposition. Just because Archie is made of magic and metal instead of spirit and flesh doesn't mean he's not alive. His steel legs flash as he gallops up and down hills that would cripple a natural horse, his metal warmed like flesh by the effort, the green spellfire that animates him crackling in his eyes and in the clear panels along his sides. They're both obeying Hollis's last order, since Hollis is the one who taught him everything he knows about survival, whether in the wilds or at court ( ... )

I love the details about how the sand affects, especially Ghost Rat's sense of beauty.

Yay Ursula! What a great way to work her in.

This continues to be awesome...and is it sad that I have an urge to make a soundtrack for it, from the dark and dusty and eclectic corners of my music library? Author, would you be up for this?

Quarters are cramped, especially with Archie crammed in as well, even depowered with his legs folded up under him and his head down. He's covered in a protective film of magic a thought thick, since even with Daniel's incredible craftsmanship, fine, constantly blowing sand can get into the works and throw everything off. The construct is a dark and eerie hulk without its glow, and Laurel spends as much time on deck as she can. It's not that she minds Archie all that much, but that she loves the wind and the scent of the sea, and everything beautiful that may or may not be there. Everything is faintly dusted with the constantly blowing sand that really does act like water. She can taste the salty-sweet quality of the sand in the soft, powdery white dust that settles over everything like early snow. Shimmering against Ursula's leathers, it makes her look like a piece of the deepest, darkest night sky. Ursula says the Sea never has any pirates, and Laurel believes her. Everything is too beautiful and perfect to spoil it with a ( ... )

Ghost Rat doesn't like the desert. It seems pointlessly hot and barren, and he wonders why anyone would want to be chief of a place where there's nothing good to eat. He moves his mask up to shade his eyes and wears his cloak to keep the sun from baking his brain. Under it he slathers his white skin with the salve Thinks Ahead had given him (along with a kiss, which is probably why he had no bad visions crossing the Sea, even though ghosts who try to traffic with real spirits usually do) and reminds himself that warriors do not whine, no matter how many cactus needles they have in their skins or how hot it is or horrible magically-condensed water tastes ( ... )

The Ghost Rat/Laurie lines here and there are making me squirm with delight. And I love the idea of kisses giving magical protection.

It's Laurel who sees it first, but she doesn't know what she's looking at. It glimmers in the distance, visibility compromised by moisture from its oasis, and Daniel grins when she points it out to him ( ... )

Brilliant intro for Eddie. You write everything so SLICK, it really reminds me of a certain other epic AU :D

Caught again. I guess I have a writing style after all. I think the most fun part of an AU is juggling individual elements. I wasn't sure where I was going to put Eddie (I had actually thought of him being Ursula's despised but useful crewman) until I went 'damn, what am I gonna do about the smiley face? It's his trademark, I have to make some kind of nod to it' and came up with the idea of there being a huge, international Fool's Guild that has a membership badge. I think it actually has a lot of members like Eddie, and that its activites go way beyond Fooling.

Oooh! I'm really loving the action so far, and you've done great at working everyone in. Interesting world. And Eddie makes me laugh. Which is his job, of course. <3 Bring on Pharoh Adrian!

Seconded. Eddie as Adrian's pet fool makes my head explode. :D (I'm thinking of the Discworld books where the Fool's Guild is actually one of the most dour and hardcore groups out there...)

The humidity of Adrian's gardens is like being kissed. Dan sighs and raises his goggles, and even Ghost Rat relaxes a little bit. Adrian isn't tasteless and wasteful enough to build an air castle, held together by nothing but his own magic. He could do it, but he's much too sensible and elegant, which is why Daniel can at least begin to call him friend. He started with an oasis, and slowly coaxed it into the lush perfection that embraces them now. Their guide is a discordant note in the presence of such beauty, but even his casual roughness spares anything too delicate to bear it. He plucks a huge, pale yellow bloom and tucks it behind Laurel's ear. Even as Daniel's hands twitch with the urge to strangle him, he has to admit that it suits her ( ... )
