Chapter 3
Laurie OstermanWinter air stung the tip of Laurie's nose as she sat in bed beside her sleeping husband, knees pulled close to her chest, feeling all of about six years old. Not in a good way ( ... )

"God, Eddie, don't ignore me, not today-" She'd never heard her mother's voice that vulnerable.

A soft bang sounded against the wall. He always did that, always rapped his knuckles against something in nervous habit when he got trapped and ran out of jokes. "Who's ignoring what, Sal?"

The silence was long. "That's not funny, that's-don't you bring him into this-"

"He's the whole point, wouldn't you say?"

Oh God, oh God he was bringing that up, the other Great Big Unspoken Thing. Laurie slid her hand down to cover her mouth, fully aware she shouldn't be listening, entirely unable to stop because this-this was enormous. It was impossible that they were actually talking about it, but. Hell. If anyone could do the impossible, it was Eddie Blake.

"Don't. Don't, Eddie, come on, please."

"It's time, Sal. Hell, it's past time. Nostalgia's killing you and everyone sees it but you. What we had-" He broke off into a murmur too quiet even for the thin wall. The silence which followed was even longer than the one before. "But what you gotta ( ... )

wow. It's a nice changeup to see a version of Laurie/Jon that's *functional* for once. Eddie/Hollis/Sally for the win?

Thanks! I have to admit Laurie/Jon fascinates me in canon even though I know she's happier with Dan eventually. So I'm pretty glad to play around with them in an AU sense and try to see what could make them work.

It was a few hours later when she woke, and not even daylight yet, judging by the thick slice of darkness showing between their bedroom curtains. Laurie frowned faintly and lifted her head from where it had been burrowed into Jon's chest ( ... )

I've been following this fic for a while and I must say that it one of my favorites from this fandom. I love how you've tweaked around with the characterizations but still maintained the essence of the characters.

Thank you so much for writing this, anon!

It was a wild morning; wind usually reserved for tumultuous spring was already cutting sharp through the dawn hours, soaking through their clothing straight to the skin.

Laurie and Jon approached Mason Dry Goods with grim determination. They'd need all the backup they could get during their descent into whatever madness Eddie was hurtling himself toward. It had only taken them a few minutes and even less discussion to ready themselves for the chase. They'd left her mother a letter and oh, Sally was going to kill her, but she could wait until all this was over. With her family back together, Laurie would gladly take whatever volume of concerned anger her mother could throw at her ( ... )

Glad you got that reference, it's too fun throwing them in. :)

And, thank you! They did not get enough (or any) happy-together-time in canon, so I couldn't resist.

Walter KovacsIt would take them five days to reach Green Springs by horseback, but there was little other alternative. Dan reminded them that no passenger train would be coming through town for at least another three weeks, and Eddie Blake certainly wouldn't be waiting so they could have a comfortable trip back east ( ... )

They out-traveled the duststorm's reach by the second day, meeting only a blue sky sharp in its cold clarity. The land changed, a result of ancient upheavals now long-quieted; flat landscape fell abruptly into cliffs and canyons, jagged earth and red rock, the heart of the Earth exposed. Adrian entertained them by explaining the different layers of stone and what they meant, all the long centuries laid bare by the work of rivers ( ... )
