Walter/Danielle.

Where Danielle meets Walter somehow and is intrigued by him, & of course who does she obssess to but her trusty (though irritable) partner, Rorschach? Would love to see Danielle picking apart all the tiny details and fantasizing in the way people do when they first start off a relationship with someone they like more than they should; Rorschach being desperately uncomfortable and digusted-flattered, maybe even some self-sabotage; and how Rory/Walter reacts to Danielle's rants about things that annoy her about Walter.

PLEASE ANON.

Not entirely sure if this is what OP had in mind, but I was inspired and gave it a shot. Broken into four parts due to length and flow issues. May be a tad schmaltzy.

Danielle Dreiberg didn’t read the same stories as other young girls as a child, more intrigued by the exploits of Sir Galahad than in waiting to see if a handsome prince might come along to awaken Sleeping Beauty, so perhaps she could be forgiven for forgetting the cardinal rules of fairy tales. Be kind to ugly strangers; there is no greater power than a kiss and nothing, nothing is ever as it appears.

He’s hideous. Danielle thinks, eying the freckled man currently measuring her waistline, flicking the tape with the ease of long practice. The freckles, the hair. Even with that shade it looks like a shag carpet. Pug nose, maybe broken once or twice.

Aloud she says, “Can it be finished by next week?”

The man grunts in what she assumes is assent, leaning over to make some notes.

Great, sparkling personality as well. She struggles to be polite, “I hope it’s not too ( ... )

It’s three days before she can see him again, and after talking her partner’s ear off for just as long, she’s sure Rorschach’s relieved at this prospect. She’d extracted the man’s name from his boss with some clever telephone espionage, and ever since she’s constantly wavering over whether or not to ask Walter Kovacs, “Eastern European name, Danielle, possible Communist!” on a date.

In retrospect, she probably should have waited until after he was finished pinning before asking.

Brushing off his mumbled apologies, she catches his hand, ignoring the sting of metal in her arm and tries to meet his eyes again.

“Walter, will you?”

He’s desperately trying to reclaim his hand, “Not proper, Ms. Dreiberg,”

“I’m not a customer after today. How about coffee?”

“Ms. Dreiberg“Please, Walter, look at me ( ... )

Dating Walter Kovacs is a bit like what Danielle imagines dating an Amish man might be like. The “no” list, in length and bizarre content, resembles the book of Leviticus. No dancing. No fancy or foreign food. No skirts above the knee, not unless you want to be plagued with disapproving looks, which aren’t very flattering when they’re coming from your date. No kissing, she found that out the hard way, when she tried to surprise him and ended up covered in Butter Brickle. This might have been fun, but Walter took one look at the melted ice cream trickling into her cleavage and had fled. She’d chased him for three blocks before being able to coax him back to the ice cream cart ( ... )

Danielle is certain it’s her imagination that makes the wind colder as she waits for Walter on a park bench. Guilt swamps her when she catches sight of red hair. There’s a tiny smile on Walter’s face as he sits beside her, and for a moment her heart fails her. How can she crush this spark of warmth which has kindled in his eyes? But she remembers inkblots and gentle fingers and unwavering loyalty and steels herself.

“Walter-” she begins, but he interrupts, uncharacteristically energetic.

“One moment, Danielle,” he says, “Have something important to say,”

He reaches for his pocket and produces a small box. Her stomach drops out beneath her.

I’m an idiot if I didn’t see this coming.“During this time we’ve spent together, I have come to care for you very much, Danielle,” Walter says, stumbling slightly as though the words are in a foreign language, “would be honored if you would be willing to enter into marital contract ( ... )

Yaaaaay! This is so happy and warm and wonderful. The whole conversation where he's stitching her wound is so great.

I'm usually content with things that I really, really love ending off in a good way like this, but I feel like I require an epilogue to this to properly function because thats a whole lot of concentrated heartache and I want some sugary sweetness with this goddamn beautiful set up. Pritty pritty please?

It's short, but I hope this will satisfy. Be warned, it's pretty sweet.

Spindle, Shuttle and Needle: Epilogue

Life isn’t like fairy tales.

Her kiss doesn’t change Rorschach into a handsome prince. He still breaks the lock on her door with annoying frequency and behaves for the most part like the bastard child of a conspiracy theorist and a Puritan minister. But then there are the things that make it all worth it.

The moment Walter screws up the courage to ask again.

The line of Rorschach’s back against her own, a solid anchor in a storm of conflict.

The look on Walter’s face when she tells him she’s going to have a baby.

The feel of Rorschach’s hand in hers at the end of a patrol.

With an ending like this, Danielle thinks, who needs happily-ever-after?

<3 In a fandom with so much depressing and angst,it's great to see something sweet and wonderful like this once in a while, where they can get their happy ending. :)
