When we first decided to homeschool our children ten years ago, there was a constellation of reasons why. A precocious four year old, a hapless school district, lack of decent and affordable private schools, and our then very avante garde lifestyle all conspired together to help make us make the homeschooling decision. This is us exactly. We ARE in a lower economic strata by virtue of my partner's job. Mental health residential counselors get paid very poorly for the amount of work they are expected to do. In this area, unfortunately, we couldn't AFFORD to have both of us working. Essentially, we would have been in the same economic position while I would be paying for the LUXURY of be allowed to work by letting strangers raise my kid ( ... )

This is a subject that comes up with us as well. It would actually cost more for me to work than to stay home. Our quality of life is 10+ times better because of the stability our family has with me at home. You add two kids with health issues to the mix (and try to find daycare for that!) and again we are financially better with me at home.

I do understand that in some areas, some situations, both parents need to work. I have also seen too many examples of parents that just don't want to do the work of parenting full time or don't want to give up certain luxuries to always believe them when they tell me that.
